Bonita Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,041 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Lakeland, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Bonita" comes from Spanish meaning "beautiful." The first people to live in what is now Bonita Springs were the Aboriginal Choctaw Nation. They built their villages on myrtle and bay laurel trees along the banks of the St Johns River. In 1802, General James K. Polk moved his army from Cuba to Cypress Point on Pensacola Bay and sighted what he thought was a great island in this body of water about midway between Tampa and Jacksonville called Santa Rosa Island. This became known as Santa Rosa Island because it did not have any trees on it that would produce fruit like those found on Tampa or Jacksonville islands. When General Polk went ashore with his troops to explore this new island he discovered that it was only an inhabited point by natives who had been sent there by Spanish traders as part of a slave trade contract! He quickly realized that this area could not be used for military purposes because of its swampy shape and high costal cliffs so he ordered his forces back to Tampa before returning to Cuba with his discoveries! After some time another group of white men set out from Mobile, Alabama, under Capt John galston sailed downriver into what is now Bonita Springs Landing pad today's UF campus where they landed two vessels which they christened USS Constitution (1805) and USS Constitution II (1806). Father Mignonnet came ashore with them on board USS Constitution II after landing at Fort Brooke near present day Apalachicola Beach Boulevard in downtown Bonita Springs on July 3rd 1806. Father Mignonnet gave religious services aboard one of these vessels which soon became known as "the floating church." After landing at Fort Brooke father Mignonnet erected a small log chapel upon the fortification named for Blessed Virgin Mary Immaculate Conception Parish Chapel which still stands today within walking distance of our current courthouse building located at 6th Street Northeast corner Gulf Drive NE & Military Road Southwest corner Government Road Southwest . In 1821 land comprising modern day Bonita Springs was acquired by Colonel James Wilkinson who sold it to Captain Ladds who founded Galena Plantation here also later renamed Cimarron Plantation due to difficulties encountered transporting crops across then-unsustainable rivers near present day Winter Park & Clearwater Beach .. In 1793 during the Louisiana Purchase land adjacent to modern day Clearwater Beach including parts of present day Bonita Hills were purchased by George Washington Parke Custis III who named it Arlington plantations after Lord Arlington whose domain included muchpartsofFloridaToday'sDaytonaBeachArea.. cleared land north side now Old US Highway 41 south side now State Road 880 just east side old US Highways 12 & 377 intersecting just east side Foley Rd . Bonita Springs is a small town in Leon County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Bonita Springs is located on U.S. Highway 9 south of Jacksonville and east of Apollo Beach. The first white settler in what would become Bonita Springs was Elisha Pratt in 1872. He built a log cabin on an old sugar plantation across from present-day Marshall's Crossing Boulevard and named it Pratt Plantation after his brother-in-law, Amos Pratt, who had donated land for the settlement. The first school was founded in 1875 by Mrs. Sarah Fenton with instruction provided by Mr. John Goode who ran a sawmill near where US 9 now crosses Main Street (then called Spring Street). In 1876 two families moved to Bonita Springs from Fort Walton Beach: the Lincolns and McCoys brought their four children, Lillie, Laura, Edwin and Jameson; while Mrs. Jane Goode had six children from her previous marriage to Capten John McCoy (1824–1902), one of which became Bonita Springs’ first postmaster In 1886 Drs Tom Hurlbut and Wm Covington established St Joseph's Hospital as a free clinic for local residents which served patients until 1922 when it became State Mental Health hospital #2 under state control Dr Hurlbut also started First Baptist Church in 1889 which remains one of the oldest churches in town today In 1907 US Coast Guard Cutter "John Sutter" docked at Fort Myers to take on refugees coming overland from Mexico City during World War I made landfall at Clearwater Cove just north of present day Driggs Avenue - this allowed for development along Driggs Avenue including homes for military personnel ashore as well as business ventures such as Jugular Juice & Cigar Store . On October 15th 1915 USS "John Sutter" sunk German submarine Kursk off Cape Coral Bay with Rear Admiral Harry Byrd commanding officer . This event helped start Vineland Naval Air Station later renamed NAS Tampa Bay .
