The United States Army has been in operation in the Bonita Springs area since World War II. The first U.S. military installation in the area was Camp Polk, which was established in 1853. In 1861, Fort Brooke was constructed on the present-day site of Coral Gables High School. From here, Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army unsuccessfully invaded Florida during the American Civil War. The fort surrendered on April 12, 1865, four days after General Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia.

Soon thereafter other European explorers discovered and explored this area as well- including Spanish Admiral Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna in 1795 while he was exploring southeast Florida as part of his expedition against Spain; he called it La Isla de las Brisas (Island of Clear Waters). Auxiliary U.S. Coast Guard Station Fort Myers opened its doors on December 21, 1923 with the task of aiding local law enforcement during Prohibition days by providing a place for officers to disembark theirboats so they could search for smugglers and criminals on inland waterways without having to go into salt water areas where such activities would be observable by others ashore or afloat; since then law enforcement activity at BSG has grown exponentially!
