The Marine Corps has been deploying gifts to civilians for over sixty years. The tradition began with the 1915 gift of a rifle to the town of Belleau Wood, France during World War I. The Marines have continued this practice by gifting various items and equipment to civilians in Bonita Springs, FL since 1945. The latest tradition is the Marines Christmas Gift Exchange. This annual event occurs in December and features local businesses giving presents to Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. In addition, members of Congress are often given gifts at Christmas time. Since 1945, the Marines have donated more than $2 million worth of items and equipment to local schools and organizations in Bonita Springs. These donations include radios, tanks, planes, rifles and pistols. Some of the most recent donations include an M-16 Rifle, Humvee and grenade launchers along with other military gear such as helmets and body armor. This year’s Marine Gift Exchange will take place on December 5th from 4-8pm at Lachlan’s BBQ restaurant located on US 1 near US 27/Fort Krueger Parkway in Bonita Springs! Bonita Springs, Florida is a small town located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was reported as 18,588 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The climate in this area is warm and humid with some occasional showers and thunderstorms. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Bonita Springs has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate. The first settlers in this area were Frenchmen who arrived in 1795 from Louisiana. They named their new land "Bonta", meaning "Island of Flowers". As time passed they developed plantations producing sugarcane and cotton for export to Europe. In 1901, the United States acquired control of Cuba and decided that it would be a good place to set up an agricultural colony; so Bonta was renamed Bonita Springs after Mrs. Hugh Waddell (nee Lincoln) who had come over on her honeymoon from Key West, Florida four years earlier. Over time much development took place here including: Stonington Elementary School which opened in 1951; US Post Office - built in 1955; local fire station - built in 1961; First National Bank building - built 1966; Centenary Baptist Church - built 1971; Drury Market Shopping Center - opened 1974 by Tom Dooley ; elected officials office buildings including City Hall (1961), County Hall (1965), State House(1971), Library Building (1974), Courthouse Annex (1978), and Aquarium/Parks & Recreation Complex (1991). In recent years many businesses have closed or moved away such as Walmart Supercenter which closed its doors in 2006 but reopened as FAO Schwarz USA just two miles away down Rte 527 south of town limits on Redbank Road.; Sears Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection effective January 1st 2013 leaving more than 2200 stores across America without a buyer following suit.; several other large retailers like JCPenney, Macy's etc., have chosen not to open any more stores due to economic conditions within our community throughout these past few years;; also numerous smaller businesses have closed or relocated since then making life much harder for residents trying to do anything semblance of a normalcy amidst all this change,,,,,, bonitaspringsgov@gmailcom

After sailing through typhoons during his voyage, hepresented Commodore Matthew Perry with a basket filled with oranges as a token of friendship. When Perry returned homewith his cargo empty, he presented an orange tree to the British Admiralty at Deptford Dockyard! On July 4th 1941 President Franklin D Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9066 which prohibited discrimination against Axis allies by American citizens within our borders based on race or national origin! This order helped pavethe way for integrating America's military into WWII by allowing Americans living outside our shores access to US products and services! Today, with over two million residents living within its limits, Bonita Springs has experienced many ups and downs throughout its history; some good while others were less fortunate such as during the 2006 hurricanes which caused extensive damage to both downtown business district as well as neighborhoods surrounding it including Miracle Mile section of town where most homes were lost or heavily damaged resulting in mass displacement among families who had no choice other than flee their homes during one of America's worst natural disasters ever – yet again highlighting how resilient our community is when faced with challenges from all sides!
