National Guard gifts have been a part of the Bonita Springs community for many years. In 1957, the City Council passed an ordinance recognizing the military services of local nationals and providing them with patriotic gift certificates. The first national guard gift was given to Mrs. Harry M. Kipperham by Capt. Charles W. Sowell and Sgt. John Ahern on October 15th, 1957. Since then, Bonita Springs has received many national guard gifts both in small pieces and as whole packs of items such as helmets, rifles, shotguns, vehicles and more! Some of the most recent gifts include new tanks and armored personnel carriers donated by the Texas Army National Guard in 2013 and 2014 respectively; a new hangar built specifically for the Florida National Guard in 2015; a large collection of army surplus clothing donated by Fort Myers Army Depot in 2016; a brand new CH-47 Chinook helicopter donated by the United States Air Force in 2017; and a brand new engine for an aging F-16 Fighting Falcon airframe from Tucson Air National Guardsmen in 2018! The history of these Gifts is reflective of how our community has come to appreciate their service to our country both during wartime times (during World War II) as well as peacetime moments when members from all walks of life are called upon to support our military efforts through donations or volunteering!

Bonita Springs is a small town located in Duval County, Florida, United States. It was founded in 1892 by Spanish settlers and its name means "Beautiful Spring." The population of Bonita Springs was 3,495 as of the 2010 census. The historic district of Bonita Springs has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978. The town is bordered to the north by Key West and to the east by Naples. To the south it shares a boundary with Clearwater Beach. Downtown Bonita Springs is surrounded by a narrowing belt of residential communities that extends from SW corner of SR-880 (Clearwater Beach Boulevard) to NE corner of SR-780 (Cowan Avenue). According to the 2000 census, there are 1,893 households out of which 42% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60% were married couples living together, 8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. In 2000 there were 2,023 households that consist entirely of individuals and 903 households with five or more people.
There are many national guard gift histories to be written, but one of the most interesting is that of the National Guard Association. This organization has been around for over 120 years and has given out a variety of gifts to individuals and organizations. One of their most famous gifts was the National Guard Christmas Tree. This tree was donated in 1941 by Mrs. Edwin Ladd to the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs, which served as its official gift recipient. The tree remained in New York until 1959 when it was moved to Albany, New York, and remains there today. Another great gift from the NGA was the National Guard Flag Collection. This collection consists of more than 5,000 flags that have been donated from across America! These flags can be seen at various locations such as Fort Benning, Georgia; Fort Worth, Texas; and Ft Drummond, Ontario (Canada). The NGFA also provides educational materials on patriotism and military history nationwide!

Bonita Springs, Florida was founded in 1892 by J.M. Bonilla and his brother, Hernando Bonilla. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the mouth of the St Johns River and its natural resources including sugar cane, cotton, and phosphate mines. In 1916, the city was incorporated as a municipality under then-Governor A. Milton Shafter. In 1940, after World War II ended, Bonita Springs became part of the newly formed United States territory of Puerto Rico and remained that way until 1898 when it reverted back to Spain. After Puerto Rican independence was achieved in 1898, Spanish colonists began moving into what is now Bonita Springs and other areas of southern Florida. One such colonist was Joséfina de la Cerda y Valdés who purchased land in 1892 from Pedro Menéndez Cámpora for $2,000 CAD (equivalent to about $40,000 today). De la Cerda y Valdés named her new home "Bonita Springs" in honor of her sister's old plantation near Baton Rouge in Louisiana where she had been born on October 12th that year. The first known resident of Bonita Springs was Fernando Fernández de la Vega who arrived with his family in 1894 from San Juan del Rio province of Venezuela aboard the brigantine "Carta Blanca". He worked as a laborer on menial tasks at La Loma Adobe before being given landowner status within two years. Fernando's father also arrived shortly thereafter: Joséfa de Jesús Fernández de la Vega y Villalobos from Caracas province on board the brigantine "San Felipe". Joséfa married Fernando’s father and together they started a small farm east of downtown which produced papaya fruit and later developed crops such as corn, beans, tomatoes etc.. Their children would go on to own farms throughout southcentralFlorida during many different periods between 1900-1920 When their youngest son Jaime departed for college at Tulane University School Of Law he inherited their property adjacent to Live Oak Cemetery near downtown Miami Beach with an area currently totaling over 107 acres comprising three plantations plus orchards/gardens... finally ending up purchasing some parcels extending down into Key Biscayne just east of Downtown Miami
