The history of the Naval Air Station, Bonita Springs goes back to World War II. The station was built as an air base for the United States Navy and it has been used by both American and Japanese forces ever since. In 1945, the Naval Air Station was decommissioned and its assets were transferred to the Florida Air National Guard. The first NASBonita Springs opened on March 1st, 1946 with a contingent of Boeing B-29 Superfortresses from Seattle. It served as a forward air control center for fighter operations during World War II. In 1951, NAS Bonita Springs became an operational bomber station with Boeing RB-47s. The RB-47s were equipped with nuclear weapons and had a short life expectancy so they were disposed of in 1957. As part of Project Delta, NAS Bonita Springs was also home to one of America’s first electronic warfare systems’ called “Starfish” which used microwave technology to jam enemy communications. In 1986, NAS Bonita Springs became an Fleet Auxiliary Base providing support for UDTN squadrons assigned to overseas deployments such as Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Operation Restore Order in Panama. On October 15th, 1992 NASBonita Springs played host to America’s first international naval exercise known as “ multinational maritime leadership training exercises (IMLEX) ” which saw more than 20 nations represented including Canada, Japan and Spain. Bonita Springs is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The community developed on a peninsula between Sarasota Bay and Lake Okeechobee in what is now Clearwater County. The name "Bonita" comes from Spanish meaning "beautiful." The first settlement in what is now Bonita Springs was made by John Swayze and his family on January 3, 1885. They built a cabin on the peninsula which became known as Swayze's Landing. By 1888, there were three settlements: Bonita Springs, Indian Point and Silver Spring. In 1893, the first school opened in Bonita Springs with thirty-one students. In 1902, the first electric light was installed in Bonita Springs when it became apparent that Electricity would play an important role in future development hereabouts. In 1909, Mayor Wm Haggerty dedicated the new State Capitol Building to Florida's history and culture which still stands today as one of Tampa’s most significant landmarks and attractions for visitors to enjoy today! It has been estimated that over $100 million worth of property has been acquired or leased within its walls since its construction- including such icons as Ybor City Casino Resort & Park (now home to Live Nation), St Petersburg Soccer Stadium & Marina (now home to US Open Tennis Championship matches), Citrus Bowl – now home to NFL’s Buccaneers and several thousand residential units surrounding it –Villa Park at Disney World – formerly known as Walt Disney World Resort –and much more! The influx of people during this time period led to many businesses opening up throughout downtown Bonita Springs such as Joe's Bicycles store/repair shop/restaurant/truck stop/grocery store; Checkers Ballroom dancing hall; Jardiniere Cafe - later renamed Alice Restaurant - ran by Mrs Gertrude Ellington; KeyWest Brewery opened up just east of downtown serving local beer along with many other restaurants starting up during this time including Grill 'n Dine located across from BP station on Railroad Street adjacent to shopping center; A&W restaurant opened downriver near current day USF campus providing national fast food chains with their original Keys outpost locations all across America! 1st Presbyterian Church was built approximately 1915 based off plans drawn up by Rev Dr Thomas Murtagh who served as pastor until his death in 1922; Shrine Temple Of Islam (later Mosque) built approximately 1940 also based off plans drawn up by Rev Dr Murtagh which remains active.. both are considered historical landmarks today In 1957 when Interstate 95 bypassed Central Florida through Polk County it created a large agricultural region right next door called "the open field". This left much land undeveloped for commercial use but resulted in some interesting architecture being erected here like First Baptist Church which replaced an existing Methodist church destroyed by fire years earlier; Elk Grove Village Nursing Home - National Register #7888 - designed by renowned architect Floyd Swain features sleek white brick exterior and red tile roofs dating back to early 1900s while Stillwell Nursery School -National Register #7926- designed by famed landscape architect Harry Wexler features unique Gothic Revival style architecture set among palm trees outside the nursing HOME
