The history of policing in Bonita Springs, Florida begins with the establishment of a municipal police department in 1916. The first officer on staff was W.H.D. Harcourt, who served as the town’s first detective. In 1938, the department placed its first call for service when a group of women set out to gather firewood near their home. The officers arrived and arrested the women for trespassing. In 1945, the Municipal Police Department was renamed the Bonita Springs Police Department after Chief Burt Jorgensen met with Mayor Hemanus Fenton at a local hotel. Jorgensen told Fenton that he would be able to provide better services and more effective protection for citizens if he were given authority over the department. With this new authority, Chief Jorgensen began building what is now known as one of Bonita Springs’ most iconic landmarks-the City Hall Building. Throughout its history, the Bonita Springs Police Department has been dedicated to providing quality service to its citizens and fulfilling its sworn duty to protect them from harm or crime. Bonita Springs, Florida is an unincorporated community located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 6,934 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Bonita Springs was first settled by Spanish colonists in 1763 as "Boca del Río". In 1872 it was renamed "Pinecrest" after the U.S. President James K. Polk and his wife Emma Gadsden Polk ( niece of Confederate General Pee Wee Gardner). In 1909, a post office called "Bonita Springs" was established in what is now downtown Bonita Springs with a population of just six people. The name originated from a statement by then-Governor Averill Harriman that if Pinecrest were to become too popular and he had to choose one post office for all of South Carolina, he would appoint a postmaster there named "Bonita Springs." In 1933, when Fort Sill opened on Pensacola Bay within the present boundaries of Bonita Springs, most residents chose not to incorporate into Fort Sill but instead create their own town—initially called Pinecrest Village—based on their choice of village form rather than becoming part of Fort Sill proper. On July 15th 1948, after years of planning and effort by citizens and leaders from both townships who wanted to merge into one larger community because they felt that it would be more successful economically than living separate lives without benefits or services available to eachtownshipcommunity; voting began on whether to merger into adjoining city limits which resulted in over 120% support by voters – including Mayor Newton Ramos who spearheaded the campaign – making merger happen! On November 3rd 1959 the name change became official as “Bonitas Springs” reflecting its growing reputation as both an upscale shopping destination and cultural center enjoyed by all segments of society including professionals and vacationers alike while still keeping its unique small town charm! Today “Bonitas Springs” remains one Of America’s Most Livable Small Towns!
