Bonita Springs, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the Spanish word "bonta" meaning " Bahamas." The first settler in what is now Bonita Springs was William Pritchard who arrived in 1837. In 1865, A.P. Hill opened up a grocery store and post office in what is now the heart of the town. By 1930, there were 11 businesses in Bonita Springs with a population of over 1,000 people. More than half of that population worked in agriculture or food processing industries such as meatpacking plants and hog farms. The city of Jacksonville annexed Bonita Springs on November 4, 1959 following a referendum vote by the citizens. On December 3rd 1957 Miami-Dade County commissioners voted to annex Bonita Springs as well during their regular meeting which was held at City Hall Annexed Building on US 301 North (now Plantation Drive). With this annexation came new taxes and regulations for both cities which had been opposing it for years because they felt that Jacksonville should have been given control overBonita Springs proper instead of just an area around it that included it administratively speaking within Miami-Dade County however they ultimately acquiesced to Mayor Dyer's wishes and approved the annexation without any public opposition from either city until voting occurred two years later when objections were voiced against it again due to concerns about how much land would be taken away from Jacksonville specifically since its borders lay within Polk County while Bonita Spring encroached into Clay County making it technically part of Jacksonville although not geographically so; Since then residents have successfully lobbied county commissioners to keep most if not all of their growth potential under Miami-Dade County jurisdiction including annexing more towns like Pompano Beach & Fort Lauderdale as well as expanding into unincorporated areas surrounding Kissimmee & Lakeland counties adding another 7 square miles (17 km2) to the county's total land area!
