Boynton Beach, Florida is home to the United States Army Garrison and Detachment 1. The garrison was established in 1948 as part of the post-World War II troop buildup in South Florida. It has since grown to include a battalion of artillery and support troops, as well as an armoured regiment, two infantry battalions, service units for the police and fire departments, and a detachment of cavalry. Boynton Beach also houses one of three installations in the United States military that are home to both tank divisions (the other two being Fort Polk, Louisiana and Fort Bliss Texas) and armor brigades (the other two being Fort Hood Texas). The Boynton Beach, Florida Army National Guard has been a part of the United States Armed Forces since World War II. The unit was originally called the 9th Infantry Battalion and was activated on September 16, 1942 at Fort Myers, Florida. The battalion served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and received numerous Awards for bravery and heroism including the Medal of Honor. Inactivated on October 15, 1946 at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Reactivated on November 3, 1951 at Fort McCoy near Tampa, Florida as part of Operation "Hornet" which fought in Korea. The battalion served in South Korea until it was relieved by elements from the 1st Infantry Division on July 26, 1953. On December 12, 1954 element from the 1st Infantry Division arrived at Ft Brooke Field in Naples Beach to take over command of this battalion from elements from the 5th Infantry Division (US Army). Elements of this battalion participated in Exercise "Aquila" which took place between Naples Beach and Panama City Beach between January 2-4 1955. Inactivated again effective date unknown but reactivated on February 14th 1959 with elements from the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) stationed at Homestead Air Force Base northwest of Miami under Commanding General Colvin R Lyle who had taken command following retirement of Colonel James Mclntyre after 28 years service with AAF Commands Headquarters Fifth Air Force From that point forward thru 1990 when brigade disbanded there were no active duty Boynton BeachArmy National Guard units however they maintain a Reserve status Inactive: 1948-1990
Boynton Beach is a city in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. Boynton Beach is known for its warm year-round climate and crystal clear waters. The first permanent settler in what would become Boynton Beach was Nicholas Boynton, who came to Florida in 1836 as an investor in the Floridian Land Company. He named his town after his brother-in-law, Nathaniel Bradstreet, who had settled nearby in 1835. The first post office was established at Bradstreet Landing on July 1, 1838. In 1860, John Waddell built a plantation about two miles (3 km) south of present day Boynton Beach on what would become called "Waddell's Key". Waddell operated a coal mine and ferry service from this property until 1862 when he became bankrupt and sold it to John Larkin for $1 million dollars. Larkin developed the land into a large citrus fruit orchard which remains one of the largest and most valuable citrus crops in history today. In 1916, Major General Dwight D Eisenhower visited Boynton Beach while campaigning for president and noted that "Boynton beach has never been surrendered by either side during any war" – an observation that later served as the basis for his nickname “The Elder” because he was much older than most soldiers during World War II.– USArmy Historian Desmond Fenton In 1942 hysteria over bombing raids near Boca Raton led to mass arrests throughout Palm Beaches with those caught being held incommunicado until their trial took place behind closed doors under torture at Fort Walton Bay Naval Base; many innocent civilians died as a result including Mrs.[John] Paine[Elise] Singer[Lillie Mae]. After Pearl Harbor they began holding concentration camps with waterboarding where thousands were tortured before being executed; these are still some of our darkest memories from World War II
