Boynton Beach is named after Edwin Boynton, a local speculator and developer who donated land to the city in 1912. The earliest evidence of habitation in what would become Boynton Beach can be found on August 26, 1867 when A.L. Richardson discovered "a small hole in the ground with some human remains" within it on his property called "Eagle's Nest." Richardson's brother-in-law William Tatum also discovered human remains in 1868 on his property known as Sunnyside which heshared with Egbert Lampley and Johnnie Burcham. The first town meeting held by the town of Boynton beach was held on January 15, 1870 under the presidency of Jno Easley Jr., later becoming mayoralty candidate for Palm Beach County government during Reconstruction Period In 1886 Palm Springs businessman Julius Rosenwald purchased 500 acres (2 km²) south of present day Boynton beach from Cushman & Wakefield for $10 per acre ($ today). This area became known as Rosenwald Park and served as a playground for students from nearby Pompano Beach Elementary School through high school until 1924 when Rosenwald gifted it to Broward County for use as open space including an amphitheater that could seat 10,000 people and football fields measuring 25 feet wide by 100 feet long which were used until 1957 when they were replaced by modern day stadium seating up to 65,000 people On November 12th 1923 prominent citrus grower James Fenton announced he would start growing oranges here and sold 1 million boxes of fruit each week to bring new life to this struggling community since 1921 when only 50 people lived here In 1936 construction began on what would become Fort Myers Civic Center which included a movie theater (the first ever built in Fort Myers), bowling alley (now closed), swimming pool (now demolished), tennis courts (now converted into office buildings), post office/mail box (now abandoned) and other public services such as drinking water service . Boynton Beach is home to two of the world's ten tallest buildings, One World Trade Center and the Atlantis Resort Casino. It is also one of the most diverse cities in Florida with a wide variety of cultures represented. The area that now makes up Boynton Beach was first inhabited by aboriginal Seminole people who hunted and fishing along the banks of Biscayne Bay. In 1836, US Commodore James Kapp sailed his ship "Eagle" through what are now Boynton Beach and Fort Lauderdale Harbor and announced plans for a new settlement on Miami Island east of Biscayne Bay called Miramar City. When American settlers arrived in what is now Broward County they were met with hostility from the indigenous people who had lived there for centuries. However, General Andrew Jackson approved their request to set up a military post on Miami Island to protect American shipping lanes in South Florida from Spanish pirates. The first white settler in what is now Boynton Beach was Captain James Fenton who built a cabin near present-day State Road 7 between 1839 and 1840 due to lack of food or water available nearer Miami proper. He named his land after his brother-in-law General David Dixon who had served under Jackson as Commandant of Indian Territory during the Seminole War (1835-1837). Fenton's cabin became known as "Fenton's Grove". In 1841 Lieutenant Augustus Steele founded Stevedore's Marina on Stonington Key which later became known as Steele Park. At this time there were only three white families living in what would becomeBoynton Beach: Captain Fenton’s family, Captains George Hickey & John Purdy’s families, & Lt Augustus Steele’s family; all others consisted primarily of indentured workers brought over from England/Ireland by their owners looking for cheap labor when sugarcane could not be grown commercially nearby because of high costs associated with wild palm trees necessary for harvesting sugar cane! Of these early colonists only about 40% remained once production commenced on sugar cane plantations inland! During its early years boyton beach basically consistedof single story wood frame homes built by pioneers like Captains Fenton and Hickey along with some barns and outbuildings used by their workers until around 1870 when cellulose papermaking began becoming more important so many homes were replaced with brick or masonry structures while other dwellings changed ownership several times until1920 when it finally became an incorporated city! On July 1st 1920 sections 11 through 15 inclusive within current day Palm Walk Village were annexed into town limits forming today's boundaries! As mentioned earlier many inhabitants started moving away during prohibition due to tough economic times however although crime rates increased during prohibition someizophony decreased overall because alcohol sales did not skyrocket like they did afterwards once Prohibition ended Many contributing factors to this rapid growth include low cost housing developments such as Sunrise Manor which opened up adjacent to Fort Lauderdale airport soon after incorporation while other private developers such as Dick Arzheimer developed lucrative real estate businesses especially around Interstate 95 southwest of town providing jobs for locals as well as access to major shopping malls across Southwest Florida throughout those years; The fact that Stonington Key was accessible via Causeway Boulevard south from downtown made it easy for businesses developing close by such as Sunoco Petroleum Refineries west of town; endless amounts of development funding flowing intoBroward county thanks largely to state legislators dedicatedly working towards bipartisanship thereby ensuring tax breaks etc.; Finally local citizens unafraid(or perhaps naive)to take risksbourgeoisie attitudes didn't always translate into effective government management thus leading directlyto numerous recessions/reforms/updates etc., culminatingwith Hurricane Ivan which devastated downtown BusinessesFTL went bankrupt trying unsuccessfullyto reroute traffic off I95pastHollywood priorto finally reopened following ample public criticism!!
The town of Boynton Beach was founded in 1923 by J.B. Boynton and his wife, Fannie. The name itself is from a Plantation on the banks of the Gulf of Mexico that was once owned by Mr. and Mrs. Boynton. In 1945, the town became a component of the Florida Keys area when it was annexed by Key West. The population of Boynton Beach grew rapidly during the 1950s and 1960s as waves of people came to work in Key West or Palm Bay ( across the bay). However, during the 1970s and 1980s,Boynton Beach experienced a decline in its economy due to decreases in visitation rates for both Key West and Palm Bay combined.
