Boynton Beach is a city located in Palm Beach County, Florida, on the Atlantic coast of the United States. The population was 11,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The town was named for A.J. Boynton, an American businessman and philanthropist who donated land to build what became Boynton Beach City Hall and other civic buildings in 1912. The town's rich history can be seen in its many landmarks, including Boynton Beach City Hall and Memorial Park Cemetery. One of the most famous residents of Boynton Beach was Sunoco founder Dean Witter Condon, who lived there from 1951 to 1959. Other notable natives include former U.S. Congressman Vito Fossella and actress June Allyson (1915-2009).
The Boynton Beach area was established in the early 1800s as a small town on the Indian River. The name "Boynton" is derived from a man who lived there and his son, Benjamin Boynton. In 1824, Benjamin's brother-in-law, James Cook, settled in the area and built the first stockade on what is now called Cooks Hill Road. By 1828, there were over 30 people living in Boynton Beach. It wasn't until after Seminole Wars that Boynton Beach became an important center of trade and commerce on the Florida Panhandle. A military post named Fort Brooke was built here in 1849 to protect traders traveling between Tampa Bay and Jacksonville. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Winfield Scott's army invaded Florida and burned down much of Tampa Bay before advancing into what is now South Georgia Island. This event marks one of history's earliest examples of warfare against another country within its own borders. In 1865, following Reconstruction following the end of slavery in America, many African Americans moved to this area because they were free but had no legal rights or access to education or jobs. Many black men worked as laborers on white farms until they could gain their own footing during Reconstruction period. During World War II, Boynton Beach saw significant growth due to its position as a naval training ground for both U.S. Naval forces and troops stationed in nearby Jacksonville and Panama City; it also played an important role in providing food for Allied forces fighting in Europe through production at various petrochemical plants located near Interstate 95N/SR 822 east of town (later known as Crystal City). Today, Boynton Beach is a vibrant community with diverse architecture and attractions unique to its location - including several world-renowned museums such as The Miami Museum Of Art (opened by Mayor Manny Diaz), Philips Arena (home of the Miami Heat professional basketball team), Biscayne Boulevard (the most well known thoroughfare within city limits) which has been Beckwith Boulevard since 1913 when it was redesignated as State Road 7A after Mayor John Fenton bought land adjacent thereto from developer J H Clark for $3 million dollars; numerous restaurants and barsheon throughout downtown; oversized shopping malls dottinglying surrounding neighborhoods; more than 100 children’s charities located throughout town; more than 350 businesses represented by ChamberOf Commerce;; two major league sports teams – the Miami Marlins baseball team playing at Dadeland Stadium northwest of town while also being headquartered at EverBank Field southeast across I-95 from town; state owned EverBank Park southside just west of downtown where Major League Baseball teams have played since 2003 include the Red Sox/Boston Red Sox game on November 15th 2007 followed by Game 5 won by Boston over St Louis Cardinals October 16th 2008)
