The Bradenton-Ft. Myers Air Force Base is home to The Florida Air National Guard's 1st Fighter Wing and the 118th Airlift Wing, both of which are equipped with Lockheed Martin F-35A Joint Strike Fighters. The wing also has the 602d Attack Squadron, which is a Boeing E-4B " Raven" squadron that specializes in airtoair refueling operations. The base was founded on 1 October 1949 as McGuire Air Force Base and named for General James M. McGuire, Jr., who served as Commander in Chief of the United States Air Forces in Europe during World War II. On 11 September 1956, the wing activated its first jet fighter squadron when it received Republic F-84D Thunderhawks from the Minnesota Air National Guard's 590th Fighter Group assigned to Minnesotan Continental Airlines Flight 924 from Minneapolis/St Paul International Airport. Since then, The Florida Air National Guard has operated more than 350 aircraft including 98% of all USAAF jets stationed at Ft Myers AFB (including most of the B-29s). In 1966, McGuire AFB became an operational military installation and began receiving newly purchased McDonnell Douglas DC-8s for use by USAF Headquarters Command (Hqcom) and subordinate commands; these aircraft were known as "Gift Jets". In 1990, Hqcom moved from Vandenberg AFB (Calif.) to Ft Myers AFB when that base became surplus due to budget cuts following the end of the Cold War. As part of Hqcom's relocation plan, much OFTC furniture was removed from various installations throughout Florida and sent across state lines to Ft Myers AFB; this included important command and control facilities such as Hqcom Battle Network Operations Center (BNOC), Communications Annex Building I & II (CABI), Intelligence Annex Building I & II (IABI), Aircraft Maintenance Annex Building I & II (AMIBI), Weapons Systems Directorate Building I & II (WSDI), Pressurized Housing Unit No. 2 (& 3) (& 4) (& 5)), Warning/ Control Tower ( WTC1 ), Data Link Suite No. 2 (& 3) (& 4)), annexes for Headquarters Squadronactivities such as Consolidated Missile Launcher Control Structure - Point Mugu Island Complex - Offshore Missile Range - Guam Main Mission Support Facility - Kwajalein Atoll Complex - Marine Corps Weapons Development Laboratory - Helicopter Services Directorate building IVb)) As part of Fort Myers' conversions into a global military hub following Operation Neptune Spear in 2001–2002 – nickname bestowed upon him by General Rick Hill – The Florida Air National Guard saw its busiest year ever with more than 400 flight hours logged accrued within 50 different countries! These flights included deployments for Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan; Operation Iraqi Freedom; NATO's Unified Service Command Aegean Sea Ops; Spain’s Civil Protection Division Hurricane Recovery Mission; Haitian relief efforts after Hurricane Ivan); Global Drug suppression ops against Chapter 8 narcotics traffickers based out of San Pedro Sula harbour in Honduras On 10 October 2006 Commander Colleen Jarrell announced plans for a new $225 million hangar at NAS Miramar adjacent to NAS Bradenton allowing additional storage capacity for Osprey tiltrotor planes used by THE FLORIDA AIR NATIONAL GUARD FOR AFRICA missile defense missions while also providing visitor amenities such as a 200 acre park located adjacent to NAS Miramar wherethe guard can launch their missiles against potential threats emanating from Africa
The Air Force is a branch of the United States military which is responsible for air and space operations. The Air Force has been in existence since World War II and today it employs over 120,000 people. It is one of the most diverse branches of the US Military with a wide range of responsibilities. The Bradenton-Ft. Myers Air Force Base community has been proud to support the flying branch for many years. In 1951, the base donated land for a new air force station and gift shop. The gift shop was dedicated to the memory of Sgt. Alvin York, who was killed in an airplane accident at Ft Myers AFB on Dec. 3, 1951. More than 50 years later, the wing conducted its annual fly-in/fly-out exercises at the Base using Grumman F8F Bearcats from Eglin AFB until 1991 when they moved to Homestead AFB in Florida. In 1992, it was announced that Ft Myers AFB would be closing and all military activity at thebase would be transferred to Homestead AFB in Florida effective Jan 1st 1993 as part of Operation Desert Shield/Storm which sought to end Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction capabilities before Saddam Hussein could rebuild them. On October 15th 1997 a Boeing 727 containing 4 Grumman F8Fs bound for Homestead AFB collided with another jet over Tampa Bay killing all 4 pilots onboard including one veteran pilot from nearby Clearwater AF who had served with USMC unit 531TCG during both World War II and Korea Conflict). This event is regarded as one of aviation history's most tragic accidents ever caused by aircraft operated within our country's armed forces!
Bradenton, Florida is a city in Sarasota County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sarasota County. The city was founded in 1893 as a small community on the mouth of the Sarasota River by speculators who prospected for oil and gas in what is now eastern Sarasota County. Today Bradenton is known for its naval shipyard and international cruise port which are major employers. The first Europeans to visit Bradenton were Spanish explorers who discovered land flowing into the Gulf of Mexico from Cuba on their way back to Spain in 1511. When they landed near what is now downtown Bradenton they named it "Boca de Cristo" (Christ's Mouth). In 1824 Englishman George Stephenson built a steamboat pier on Tampa Bay and transported goods between Tampa and Liverpool, England using his own steamboats called the Rocket and Britannia. He also founded Hillsborough Township northeast of downtown in 1825 with John Pemberton as its first settler. In 1861 both Stephensons were killed when their boat,the Terror, ran aground off shore off Fort Myers Beach while transporting troops during the American Civil War. A plaque at that location commemorates their deaths as well as local entrepreneurs John Witherspoon (a founder of Macy's department store), James Fenton (founder of nearbyÓrganization later called Fentress Rubber Company), and Isaac Newton Payne (father-in-law to then Governorof Florida David Citty). From 1896 until 1959Bradenton was part of Jacksonville metropolitan area; however following annexation by Sarasota County in 1959 it became an independent city under its own governance with a Mayor/Council form of government In 2003 City Council adopted Resolution No 5 which directed all city departments stop accepting gifts or donations from organized crime groups without appropriate suspicion or evidence being developed by law enforcement officials.; this ban remains effective today In 2006 City Council passed Resolution No 6 which authorized $10 million dollars be set aside for economic development within five years concentrating efforts around transportation including but not limited to infrastructure renewal such as widening I-4 into an interstate highway type road; this initiative has resulted in several large projects such as expansions to Bradley International Airport City Hall has been home to many famous people including current Mayor Raymond Suarez who took office on January 1st 2009 As one example recent activity City Council directed all construction crews working on intersections located near Interstate 471/SR 297 be diverted away from those intersections until further notice because there may be someone driving illegally through those intersections

In 1861, the US military constructed Fort Brooke on downtown Bradenton's harbor to protect Spanishtown from Confederate attacks. The fort was abandoned in 1865 and has been visitor center since 1971.
