Bradenton, Florida is a city located in Bay County, Florida. The population was 1,787 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Bay County and one of the most populous cities in Southwest Florida. The city is named after Captain James Braden who fought for Florida during the American Revolution. The City of Bradenton was platted on December 12, 1835 by Colonel John C. Moore and his brother-in-law Dr. George Lipscomb as "Bradenton Township." On November 3rd, 1837 Miami Beach took over control of Bradenton from Bradford Township and incorporated it into its own government. In 1841, Jacksonville annexed Bradleyton and became its second largest municipality with a population of 10,000 residents. In 1886 Congress passed an act creating Bay County by merging much of what had been Liberty Island (now part of Fort Myers) with Muskegon Heights to form Bay County. On October 14th 1904 the first election to be held under this new county system was held and Mayor Jules Hickey won reelection with over 68% of the vote. In 1916 Orange Blossom Trail extended through downtown Bradenton from east to west providing transportation links between Tampa and Orlando while also connecting Jacksonville with Gainesville via land bridge across Lake Okeechobee that had been built by Spanish settlers in 1564 as part of their conquests in South America looking for new land to settle after their successful exploration of North America which ended about 15 Instead they founded St Augustine de la Vega on what is now Duval Street near First Avenue south just south of today's University Drive which then connected Tampa with St Petersburg along I-5 then crossed into Polk County east side at US 192nd Street before reaching its current terminus at US Highway 98 north side about two blocks east of downtown on State Road 722 just past today's junction with SR 724 (N/A - no active highway). On January 1st 1928 when all but 8 municipalities were merged into Broward County effective statewide changes were made effective including provisions for automatic annexation by adjacent municipalities if they had a population greater than 50000 within 7 years without prior written consent from those municipalities or if they met certain economic criteria such as having property tax rates higher than median values within that jurisdiction or having a school district which did not accept pupils from another municipality
