It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bradenton is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa) according to the Köppen Climate Classification system. The area that now Bradenton was originally all within present-day Sarasota County. The first European to visit this region was Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 when he sailed upriver from Havana Harbor into what is now Sarasota County and visited some villages near where today's downtown stands. A charter for a trading post called "Bradenton" was granted by Captain John Smith in 1718 at what is now known as Dockery Point on Biscayne Bayou. Bradenton is a city in Eastern Florida, United States. The population was 31,057 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The region that now includes Bradenton and Pinellas County was first settled by Native Americans in the early eighteenth century. In 1821, Congress created Fort Myers as an arsenal for the US Department of War after a skirmish with Seminoles in which American cannonball killed five Seminole chiefs. In 1824, Captain John Fitch established a ferry service across Tampa Bay from Fort Myers to Sarasota County and then east to Bradenton on Biscayne Bay. A lighthouse was built at Point Service in 1836 to guide ships across Tampa Bay; it was destroyed by fire in 1904. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E Lee moved his army from Petersburg to Jacksonville because he thought that Lee could not be defeated if he were located near General Ulysses S Grant's army at Manassas Junction near Fairfax Station in Northern Virginia. On November 14th of that year Union General Pickett withdrew his forces from Jacksonville and moved them south into Charlotte County so that he would have unimpeded access to supplies coming up the Stono River from Richmond via Norfolk Necklace Road (now Governors Highway) and Smithfield Road (now Holiday Inn Express Rd). Union forces burned several towns and villages along this stretch of road during their retreat before reaching Jacksonville on January 9th 1865 just prior to Confederate Gen’t Johnson’s surrender at Appomattox Court House 2 days later on April 9th 1865.) During World War II, many naval activities took place off Bradenton including USS Submarine Base Pearl Harbor (1941-1945), USS Wasp Amphibious Squadron Seven (1945-1946), USS Hollandia Air Station(1948-1950), Naval Air Station Patuxent River(1951-1959), Naval Ammunition Plant(1960-1965), NAS Atwater Field(1966-1970)and more recently NAS Gulliver Island.(2007-) It has also been home to various USAF installations such as MCAS Miramar (1983-) and Whiteman AFB Joint Reserve Base - Live Oak Army Depot (1989-) The city began planning for its own water system when Mayor Harry Marshall suggested building one due to lack of available water supplies outside of Jacksonville proper. The first plant opened up shop on October 1st 1903 with over $2 million dollars worth of construction done within three months! Today there are over 200 plants serving approximately 400,000 customers! These plants provide drinking water for both public health concerns as well as our municipal needs! Additionally, these plants help keep our waterways clean by removing pollutants such as fecal coliform bacteria which can cause food poisoning or other illnesses
