The city was founded in 1892 by millionaire and citrus grower George Prentice Braden and lumber baron James Buchanan Willingham as a stop on the old Prentice and Willingham Railroad. In 1897, it became an incorporated municipality. The Bradenton Shipbuilding Company produced luxury liners such as Benares (1910), Herald (1912), Titanic ( 1912), and Olympic (1928). The company closed its doors in 1957. However, Bradenton's maritime heritage continues to be celebrated with several festivals each year commemorating maritime history: "Festival of Fireboats" in early summer; "Maritimefest" in late fall; and "Shipbuilders' Heritage Festival" in spring. Today, much of what once were shipyards are now used for various types of businesses including manufacturing, software development, education, retailing, health care and tourism. Bradenton also has a rich agricultural history dating back to when land near today's downtown was first set aside for agriculture by captain John Mosely who arrived from England in 1763 during British rule over America. He named his settlement after his brother-in-law Sir Stamford Riggs who had been Governor of Georgia at that time. Agricultural production here increased rapidly due to irrigation systems developed during the turnofthe century by pioneer farmers such as Elisha Peckham and Jno Halsey Ketchum which improved water availability around Tampa Bay while increasing crop yields 20 fold or more between 1885-1920 alone! Today some 8000 acres are planted with crops like cotton, corn., soybeans., rice., apples., oranges., pumpkins., honeybees,,eucalyptus trees,,and avocados.– making this one of America’s leading producer/exporter agriculturally! An estimated $2 billion is generated annually from economic activities within local borders! Some 200 small businesses cover nearly every aspect vital to this thriving community including many that have thrived since annexation into City government back in 1978! Many people view these days as “The Good Old Days” when things were just better because so much has changed since then!!

Bradenton, Florida is a city in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 97,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hillsborough County. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Ft Myers Combined Statistical Area. The area now called Bradenton was first settled by Indian traders in what is now Hillsborough County on November 1, 1795 as "Tampa Bay." The name originated with Captain James Cook's voyage of discovery in 1778 and refers to his finding of two bayous (rivers) named "Bay goton" (now known as Tampa) and "Boca Chica". In 1836, when US Congress passed an act establishing Polk County, they appropriated $20 for a courthouse and jail in what are now downtown Bradenton and much of today's east side including Ybor City and Spring Hill. On December 6, 1839 - after Hurricane Andrew had made landfall - US Army General John Pemberton ordered all military forces within5 miles (8 km) of Cuba to be disbanded until further notice because he feared that Cuba would become an open land acquisition by Spain should another storm like Andrew hit the island. This order caused many stores and businesses to close including those operated by local entrepreneur Sam Houston who closed his home near Fort Brooke on Boca Raton Boulevard due to lack of food. In 1905 – after a referendum approved annexation by Hillsborough County – the town ofBradenton was platted just north of present-day downtown Bradenton on land ceded from Muskegon Heights Township which had been created less than one year earlier as part of a annexation referendum held for that purpose by both counties. The first building constructed in what became known as 'the Town' were two blocks west of current day Boca Raton Boulevard between Merchant Street and Western Avenue; this block later became known as Park Place (). A post office opened in 1907 under the name 'Belle Isle'. Two years later it changed its name to 'Bradenton' after then-Governor Manuel de la Concha y Salazar donated land adjacent to Belle Isle for development into a township center with schools, churches, water supplies and other public amenities. In 1912 – following passage through Congress authorizing annexation by Hillsborough/Hillsborough Counties into Pinellas/Pinellas County – citizens voted overwhelmingly (97% yes vote) to establish their own government within their newly formed county rather than allow Pinellas/Pinellas County governing body - which at that time consisted onlyof elected members - to annex them without their consent or vote An election conducted subsequent spring resulted in Harry Wimmer being elected sheriff while incumbent Tom Casey lost renomination; however Wimmer served out his term until 1915 when he resigned effective April 15 due to ill health.. In 1916 Wimmer again ran unsuccessfully for sheriff against incumbent Tom Casey but this time won re-election handily becoming Pinellas/PinellasCounty Treasurer before retiring from politics altogether at the age of 78 years old.. It wasn't until 1945 when votersapproved annexation once more through a referendum voting 98% yes on proposition 3 stating: “that there should be no change whatsoever during our stay here” As required by state law priorTo such incorporation any changes must have been effectedby act OF congress not thru ballot measure !!! Incorporation took placeNovember 7th 1945 thru Decatur HIllsbourghCounty Board Of Elections !!! After incorporation new laws were putinto effect providing services & facilities not available thru prior legislations
