Bradenton, Florida is a city in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 26,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pasco County. The city is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is a major port for shipping telecommunications products and services to southeastern Michigan and other parts of the United States. The area that now Bradenton was first settled by Native American tribes in what is now Sarasota County in 1839. The first European American to settle in what would become Bradenton was Captain John Sitton of Duval Bay Company who built a small house on present-day Causeway Boulevard in 1840. By 1845, over fifty Englishmen had established themselves along the Tampa River as part of British East India Trading Company's colony known as "Bradenton". In 1846, Spanish settlers arrived from Cuba with plans to establish a permanent mission at Fort Brooke near modern day Bradenton Beach after discovering natural resources hereabouts including mangroves and salt water flats lying off the coast of Jupiter Island. However, due to military engagements between Spain and America during the Mexican–American War (1846-48), no missions were founded in this area until after Seminole Wars ended with Texas gaining independence from Mexico in 1836 (See: Battle ofigator Key). As early as 1849–50 there were rumors circulated among some English colonists living along Tampa Bay about using an uninhabited island east of downtown Tampa as their new capital because they considered it more auspicious than Hillsborough County which they saw as too swampy and subject to mosquito infestations. On December 5th 1850, when local men under command of Captain David Aiken arrived at Anacostia Island just inside Indian Harbor with James Buchanan's letter requesting permission to found a government on Anacostia River became official when acting Governor William Troup signed an order authorizing Captain Aiken's expedition named "Election" for this purpose with letters patent dated January 10th 1851 granting land Lots 1 & 2 tracts 3/4 acres each northward thereof... After careful consideration Eagerly awaited its instructions from higher powers relative thereto we set out February 9th last aboard our gallant ship Election bound for Spanish Town but being stopped at Port Richey we reached that place February 15th having made three voyages without success... As soon as news came back stating that Government House had been burned by Umatilla Indians we determined immediately to return; however before reaching our vessel Espiritu Santo took possession thereof leaving us stranded there two days... When finally Greenblatt’s squadron appeared athwart us steering due west we discovered that his object was not merely blockade but invasion; accordingly returning home via Pensacola Bay on April 10th we landed our troops disembarking at St Augustine LandingApril 11th advanced upon Fernandina fortifications April 12nd making entry by way dells only finding one prewar cannon still mounted.... Our absence caused great anxiety among those inhabiting Spanish Town who believed their valuable stores had been destroyed or plundered while we were away receiving information daily from Coast Guards stationed around town respecting any threats or hostilities against us by these savages.... After four weeks' hard march through thick jungle followed by another four weeks' march through open country without food or restweakened by disease brought us within six miles [10 kilometers]of Mobile City March 25st We encampd there night under cover of darknessMarch 26st began our marches again taking one day every week into account traveling 350 miles [500 kilometers] since leavingMobileMarch 27st arrived at Opelousas Alabama March 31st having passed through Choctawhita creek May 7thin
The United States National Guard is a national reserve force of the United States. It was created on June 16, 1947, by an act of the United States Congress. The National Guard provides military defense of the nation and its citizens through joint exercises with other Federal agencies and by training Reserve officers to become commissioned officers in the U.S. Army or Marine Corps. The Militia Act of 1792 gave rise to the modern National Guard as well as state militias in each country of the Union. National Guard gift history starts with Revolutionary War Era patriot George Washington’s call for member-soldiers to form “a body without having any connection with any particular State or Province” so that they could act together against British tyranny. In 1792, Congress passed a bill giving the president authority to call forth citizen soldiers from various parts of America for service in time of war or emergency; however, it did not specify what type of service these troops would serve, only that they be volunteers “of good character and proper qualifications” (1). In 1807, General James Kapp returned from his mission in Mexico City with news that Mexican revolutionaries were planning to overthrow Spanish rule throughout North America and turn all American colonies into independent republics – this information Prompted President John Quincy Adams to order all volunteer units called into federal service (2). This call for patriotic duty soon led to organized militia formation throughout America; there were divisions along religious lines (3), gender (4), age groups (5), property classifications (6), social backgrounds (7) and regionally based interests (8). Militia activity picked up again during Jacksonian America when internal strife caused suspicion among many Americans about their Govt servants & political opponents being members/former/affiliated with Royalist forces abroad (&9). With tensions running high following Andrew Johnson’s 1876 impeachment trial & conviction on corruption charges, calls for individual units within local militias became more common (&10). Following World War I & V-E Day commemorations in 1919–20, patriotism began waning among most Americans due largely to economic challenges at home (&11). However, following passage of legislation calling for bartering between militaries & servicemen during World War II (&12), patriotic sentiment slowly reemerged (&13) through programs such as Victory Garden Day displays across America (&14).
