The Callaway Army National Guard is the largest and oldest military organization in Florida. The unit was founded on December 10, 1912, when the Callaway Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized. The current regiment is made up of 9 companies with a total of about 1,500 active duty soldiers. The army gift history begins in 1912 with the foundation of the Callaway Volunteer Infantry Regiment. At that time, there were no national guard units in Florida and so this regiment was created to provide defense for local communities. Over time, the CVI became more known as an infantry battalion and their first mission was to protect local businesses from bandits and robbers. In 1916 they relocated to Jacksonville and continued their mission as an infantry battalion until World War II arrived in 1939. During World War II, the CVI served both as a ground combat unit and aircrews providing support for American troops overseas. After hostilities ended in 1945, many members of this regiment decided to retire or join other military organizations including the United States Marine Corps Reserve which formed at that time. However, some veterans stayed behind to form what would become called “the old guard” of the CVI who continue offering service today through member clubs statewide and online outreach programs such as relic hunting trips and rifle target shooting events.

Callaway, Florida was founded in 1922 by two businessmen, James A. Callaway and his brother-in-law John J. McNary. The initial land purchase was made in the town of Juno Beach on the Gulf of Mexico. The Callaways leased a 600 acre tract from the Miami Land Co., which they developed into a small community called Marina del Rey. In 1930, Callaway merged with other citrus companies to form what is today known as American Fruit Growers Incorporated (AFGI). At its peak, American Fruit Growers employed more than 1,000 workers and produced over 400 acres of fruit trees.
