Callaway is a town in Putnam County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,929 at the 2000 census. It is the seat of Putnam County. Callaway is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by surveyors John Callaway and James Ladd in 1824 as a small community on the banks of Kissimmee River near present-day Orange Blossom Trail. The name "Callaway" originated from a phrase used to describe Indian warriors who had rendered great services to their country: "the Chiefs called them 'Callaways'. In 1836, Callaway became an incorporated village under the jurisdiction of Jacksonville. In 1851 it became a separate town when Jacksonville was consolidated with Putnam County. In 1902, Telephone Company built its first line into Callaway and commenced business there as a switchboard operator for local telephone companies throughout Putnam and Osceola Counties. By 1923 all lines were extended into nearby Lakeland, which led to annexation by Callaway that same year. As early as 1928, electric streetlights began being installed in the town limits; they were turned on full force by 1935 During World War II (1939-1945), Callaway played host to many servicemen who worked at various munitions plants located in or around the small town. Most notably were members of General Motors' Willys-Overland Division which manufactured trucks for military use; these workers lived quarters in two long buildings known locally as 'The Plant'. Other industries that attracted workers during wartime were manufacturing plastics and aircraft parts production at Park Place Paper Company; those jobs stopped after 1945 but are still remembered today by locals who recall seeing plastic bags being filled with parts coming out of this company's plant across from Main Street (since demolished). calloway

Callaway is a small town in Peninsula County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville–Boca Raton–Pembroke Pines, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Callaway was founded by farmers in 1884 as a post office and general store. In 1925, the Callaway School Board established a high school which later became known as Jacksonville State University. The first settlers were eight farmers from Ohio who arrived on horseback in August 1884. They built a log cabin and named it "Callaway". The post office was established in October 1884 and operated for three years until it was discontinued due to lack of customers. In 1925, the Callaway School Board established Jacksonville State University with land donated by Drury Herndon and his family. Jacksonville State University became one of America's first public universities when it opened its doors on September 30, 1926 with twelve students. During World War II, Callaway served as an airfield for the United States Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force during Operation Varsity Plus throughout December 1943-March 1944; this was also the only time that an airfield located within mainland Florida had been used to support combat operations during World War II. On November 15, 1959, Hurricane Earl hit southern Florida and caused $10 million damage to businesses and homes across southern Peninsula County alone; this made Callaway one of the most impacted communities in southeasternFlorida during Hurricane Earl's wrath.. After being battered by Earl's powerful winds and rains over several days (November 17-20),Callaway experienced some initial flooding that occurred when water pooled around power poles downed by Earl early morning Wednesday morning November 22nd; however such water eventually receded after hours of rain that followed additional stormwater runoff from adjacent areas).
