The Coast Guard has been in operation in Callaway, Florida since 1921. The first coast guard station was established at Point Clear Beach on November 10th of that year. At that time the lighthouse and beach were both under the jurisdiction of the same agency. In 1924, a second coast guard station was established just north of Callaway Pier, and then in 1925 a third station was built at Little Harbour. In 1941,Callaway became an active hurricane warning center and until 1959 it also served as a base for the state's air traffic control system. In 1966,the Callaway pier was closed to all commerce due to great decay which interfered with maintenance of the structure. However, restoration work on the pier began in 1979 and it reopened to commercial traffic on May 1st of that year. Today there are four coast guard stations operating within Callaway County: two located at Point Clear Beach and two located at Little Harbour. It is important to note that not all members of the Coast Guard remain stationed in these locations; some may be assigned permanently or intermittently to various locales around Florida while other members provide support during specific incidents or emergencies. Callaway, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Gainesville-Lakeland, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Callaway area has been inhabited by various cultures and groups for centuries. The first European to visit Callaway was Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524. He named the village after his friend, Sir Walter Raleigh's son, John Callaghy. In 1837, Jephthah Gorgas built a cabin on what is now known as State Road 97 west of town and called it Gorgasville after himself. In 1881, James Acheson purchased 640 acres of land east of town from John Denson for $4 per acre. This land would become the nucleus of what is now Callaway Village and Gorgasville Park. At this time there were only five homes in Callaway Village and Gorgasville Park and development continued slowly until 1915 when Jack Ladd developed 240 acres east of town along State Road 97 which would become known as Ladd City On December 16, 1926 the first golf course was opened in what is now Callaway with 14 holes that cost $2 per player ({$2=0.50} cents per hole). The course was designed by George Prentiss who also opened Pershing Golf Course near Phoenix Arizona in 1927 which became world famous for its difficult greens fees {$25}. In 1941 an addition 9 courses were added to the original 13 courses{$115}. With increasing popularity came expenses associated with maintaining such a large facility including new clubhouse and restaurant buildings as well as maintenance costs for electric golf carts which had been introduced during World War II In 1961 Bob Hope Country Club (now Bob Hope Resort) was completed next to where Ladd City used to be making it easier for people not living too close to the golf course or wanting to drive themselves there frequently{$325}. From then on calls started coming back "What are you going to put here?" followed by "How much will it cost me?" As more people moved into areas such as Tallahassee they wanted their own piece of land so developers began building larger subdivisions including one located just outside of town off Interstate 495(now I-75) which became known as Indian Bend . Some interesting aspects about this time period include that Calvary Chapel (founded 1925), St Johns Episcopal Church (1929), First Baptist Church (1936), Hillsborough Christian School (1969), Gulfstream International Airport Authority Plant #1 (1980), Gulfstream International Airport Authority Plant #3 (1990) all closed down within a few years due largely to economic problems although some remain active today like St Johns Episcopal Church Sanctuary Center inside Indian Bend Ranch .
