Callaway, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,769 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Lake Buena Vista metropolitan area. Callaway was founded in 1892 by J.C. Callaway and his wife Fannie Boykin Callaway as a trading post on Hwy. 19A between Indian Harbour and Jupiter Island. A post office was established in 1895 and remained in operation until 1959. The community first developed around the sugar refinery operated by the Boykins family from 1902 to 1923. In 1924, the Callaways built a larger sugar plantation called Belle Isle which they continued to operate until 1953 when it was sold to Gulf Refining Company for $3 million dollars. After that point, Belle Isle became known as "Callaway Plantation" while the Sugar Pineapple company continued to produce cane sugar there until its closure in 1984-1985 under newly implemented US regulations banning white people from owning plantations with more than 20% of their workforce employed in agriculture or extraction industries such as sugar production. Since 1985, most of what remains of Belle Isle has been preserved as a working plantation including many historic buildings and outbuildings still standing today; however, much of the surrounding land has been redeveloped into mixed-use housing developments including retail space and officespace adjacent to several large parks within walking distance of both Callaway's downtown core and Steele Creek Park located adjacent to Interstate 4way Exit #321 providing access to Hurricane Irma evacuation areas across central Florida In recent years, discussion about resurrecting Belle Isle as an agricultural research AND production center for local farmers has increased with plans for multiple acreage acquisition (possibly through condemnation) nearby for redevelopment into this purpose along with additional support from state/national government funding programs currently available through USDA’s Rural Development Administration - specifically Specialty crops research program funds which could be used herein should development occur
