Callaway is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and was named after Callaway Plantation in Georgia. As of the 2010 census, Callaway had a population of 564 people. The first settler in what is now Callaway was James Hinton who arrived in 1839. He built a cabin on the present site of Callaway Village and named it after himself, James Hinton Place. The first post office was established at this location on November 6, 1843., by J.H. Ayres and A G Pritchard with the name "Calloway". In 1851, skirmishes took place between Seminole Indians and settlers near present-day Mims Creek Bridge over which the Stonington Road crosses today. In one skirmish twenty-one men from Callaway were killed while thirteen other defenders were taken prisoner including three future Ulysses S Grant brothers – Andrew (1811–1892), George (1825–1902) and Philander (1827–1907). In 1870s there were many new residents to Callaway as cotton plantations began to be developed west of Jacksonville around Tampa Bay. One such plantation was White Sulphur Springs run by Drayton Wade & Sons which processed sulfur dioxide gas for lighting into lime for use as mortar and plaster; it produced more than 1 million pounds of sulphur dioxide each year until its closure in 1922 due to air pollution concerns only two miles from where it operated! The plant's remains can still be seen east of town along US-1 just south of mile marker 173 on Old Gulf Coast Highway near Pensacola Beach! In 1902 Mr Wades son John D Wade became president pro tem for Polk County following his father’s death; he also served as sheriff from 1903 until his retirement in 1928/29 When he passed away Mrs Wade continued to serve as president pro tempore until her own death five years later! After Mrs Wade's deaths both offices were combined into one when they moved from their original location within the old courthouse building adjacent to US1 just northeast cornerof Pensacola Boulevard South! On July 15th 1957 Hurricane Earl made landfall just north of here making major damage across much central Florida killing some 12,000 people including 5000 people in Polk County alone! With so many fatalities already wrought by this natural disaster several churches located not too far from here set up tents or barns inside local schools during what would become known as ‘Earl’s Week’; all profits gleaned went towards helping those affected by Hurricane Earl! After almost fifty years since Hurricane Earl made landfall few remnants remain evident anymore but that doesn't mean that history has not been made here at least!!
