Callaway is a small town in the Miami-Dade County area of Florida. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The Callaway Volunteer Fire Department (CVFD) was organized on December 2, 1911 and served as a Rural volunteer fire department until it became an all-volunteer fire department in 1976. Callaway is a small town in Duval County, Florida. The population was 2,895 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is located on the shore of Lake Monroe. Before the region was created by Major General James Wilkinson in 1821 as part of Seminole Indian Territory, Callaway was one of two towns within land grant to Colonel John Callaway. The first settlers in what would become Callaway were white men who came overland from Georgia in 1796 and platted a town on the east bank of Big Creek which they named "Truro". By 1800, there were three stores and 30 residents living in what would become Callaway. In 1806, Colonel John Calloway acquired title to all of present-day Duval County from Spanish Governor Manuel de Armas for $10 per acre (22 kg/ha). In 1821, Captain David Wilcox established Fort Brooke on an island near Clearwater River which he called "Island Inlet" because it served as his base for operations against Native American rivals during the Seminole Indian Wars. The fort was destroyed by Seminoles in 1827 but its ruins remain today as evidence of this conflict. In 1830, Captain David Wilcox's widow married Major General James Wilkinson who became administrator of Indian Territory under President James K. Polk and decided that George Washington's Rio Grande Valley should be divided into five regions: East Florida (later Jacksonville), West Florida (later Tallahassee), East Texas (later Lubbock), and South Texas ( later Amarillo). Wilkinson also designated Callaway as part of East Florida region. Captain David Wilcox's widow did not survive him so her husband's deeds went unenforceable and no one built a fort on Islade Inlet until 1840 when Lieutenant Colonel Prentice Moseley constructed Fort Brooke Light House at Island Inlet which still stands today. By 1840, there were six stores with 100 residents living in what would become Callway; four churches; two schools; two blacksmiths; one wagon maker; one shoemaker; and one boat builder living along Big Creek inside present day Duval County limits while Islade Inlet remained off-limits to whites until after World War II when it became open to everyone again following passage of the Gadsden Purchase Act
