Callaway was platted in 1904 by J.C. Callaway and Wm. Hagerty as a farmstead for conservation purposes; it has been called "the most beautiful place in Polk County." The community's early residents were farmers who raised horses and hogs on a large piece of land that now includes part of the campus of University of South Florida (USF) School of Medicine. The area now known as Callaway was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1663, when they established Fort Moultrie on the present-day site of Callaway Heights. The original town site was near what is now USF Medical Center; it grew up around their farms and forts until after World War II when development began along the southern coast of Lake Butler: housing developments, shopping malls, and beach resorts sprang up around USF's medical center and other campuses. Today, much of the old town remains within the boundaries of Callaway but portions have been annexed by other communities or are included within USF's school district; those parts that have been annexed form part of today's population estimate for Callaway at just over 10,000 people including retirees from nearby Tampa Bay Area cities like St Petersburg and Clearwater Beach as well as students from colleges throughout South Florida who commute to USF for classes. Callaway is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Callaway Volunteer Fire Department No. 1 was organized on February 14, 1903. The first fire was fought in a wooded area near present day Callaway Elementary School. The department had two members and served three towns until it became one battalion with twenty-four members on December 15, 1912. The first building in Callaway was a tabby barn used by the First Presbyterian Church for services and storage. In 1907 a schoolhouse/library were built and were dedicated by Revs John Hargrave and Harry Aiken on January 11th of that year. Mrs Fannie Walters donated land to build her own home on which she resided until her death in 1944; the current property includes both buildings. From 1915 to 1918 there was an effort to purchase land adjacent to present day Callaway for use as an airport but no successful efforts were made due to lack of funds or interest from private individuals or businesses who could provide necessary infrastructure such as runway markings or taxiways etcetera needed for such an endeavor. In 1951 Captain Cockerill purchased 5 acres (2 ha) just east of town from Frank Wexler & Sons Nursery because he felt that it would be his “mission” to develop this land into what would become Callaway Airport Today! After years of hard work by many individuals over the years progress has been made with new asphalt runways being installed as well as repair projects which have included replacement of several hangars including one dating back to World War II!
