Callaway is a town in Tallahassee County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee-Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Callaway is located on U.S. Route 2 south of Interstate 95 and east of State Road 925 (SR 925). The town was named after August Callaway, an early settler in the area who donated land for a Presbyterian church in 1868. In 1922, Callaway became one of fifty towns within the newly created Seminole County when it was organized from parts of Polk and Pasco counties. calloway Indian until the 1880s; during that time they hunted here as well as gathered shellfish from local estuaries The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Callaway were three men who landed on Valentine's Beach on December 12, 1837: James Kappenheimer, William Henson and Nicholas Biddle. There are several old buildings still standing today including Kappenheimers' Cabin which still stands facing onto US 2; Henson's Store which still stands facing onto SR 625; and Biddle's Store which still stands facing onto SR 925 (now I-95). Some other structures built during this time include Furniture Row House which was built by Daniel Bates; Wimbletts House which was built by Drury & Sons Merchants Warehouse Company; Asbury Methodist Church which was built by Reverend John Asbury Jr.; Post Office Building erected about 1890'; Baptist Church erected about 1906'; Schoolhouse constructed about 1928'. Today there are only a few remaining structures dating back to this time including Pigeon Forge Creamery building dating back to 1907 and Asbury Methodist Church belltower dating back to 1932 When statehood came around in 1901, Callaway voted unanimously not to secede from Florida but instead become part of the new state of Georgia. On February 14th 1903 JacksonvillePost Office received its charter from the General Assembly allowing for private post offices throughout all Florida without having to go through the Governor’s office like before where mail could get lost or delayed due to political shenanigans or just being slow because people didn’t have telegraph service yet! So our little village continued doing business as normal...right until Thursday night when we got hit with some really big news! A tornado touched down right next door causing extensive damage with many homes destroyed along with trees limbs snapped clean off..Well needless to say our whole community had quite an uproar going on! But soon as we started looking at pictures we saw that many people had actually taken their photos right after the storm while it remained damage free! Just another way those brave folks went above and beyond while trying help out their neighbors during difficult times! And no matter how you feel abouttornadoes - everyone can understand why so many people took such great precautions following this horrible event!! After spending days rebuilding everything inside and out (even taking down our own pulpit since ours had been damaged) reopening our doors once again felt like just another day in paradise..until Monday morning when things started happening again! What did we do? We quickly put together a Recovery Team - consisting of locals ourselves -to start workingday & night rebuilding any & all property damage& helping anyone involved whether it be family members or friends..It wasn't easy though because THESE STORMS ARE NOT GOING TO STOP ANYTIME SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!! Let's just keep pounding away at these things shall we?!!!
