The first mention of coffee in Callaway seems to be from a 1907 article in the Callaway Daily Sentinel which reported on a visit by J.D. Watson, an American explorer and naturalist who was on his way to study the cactus-covered hills near Jacksonville. While in town, Watson met some men who were roasting coffee beans in their home. It is likely that these men were also responsible for bringing coffee to Callaway and it began to be grown there around this time. In 1912, George Wetherbee purchased land adjacent to the current call center campus and began developing it into what is now known as theCallaway Coffee Estate. By 1916, all of the buildings on the estate had been completed andWetherbee started selling coffee beans from his plantations throughout town and surrounding areas. Over time, various other businesses have joined Wetherbee in developing the area that now contains Callaway Coffee Estate including a hotel/motel complex built on what is now Interstate 10; several schools; several clinics; as well as several golf courses. There are currently over 20 production sites across six countries where Arabica beans are roasted under one roof!
