The first golf course in the area was designed by Dr. Charlie Payne and opened in 1957.

Callaway is a town in Sumter County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,841 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The Callaway Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1925 and today has over 1,500 employees. The town was founded by John C. Callaway and his family on a tract of land that he donated to the community in 1922. At first, Callaway consisted of only a few homes and a small schoolhouse. However, with the help of some local farmers and businessmen, Callaway quickly grew into an agricultural center with a population of around 100 people in 1925. In 1955, Callaway became one of the towns in Sumter County when it was merged with neighboring Dunnellon to form the Jacksonville–Dunnellon Combined Statistical Area (CSA). During its time as part of Jacksonville–Dunnellon CSA, Callaway experienced some significant growth including the construction of several new churches and schools as well as many new businesses such as gas stations and pharmacies. In recent years however, there has been noticeable decline in both business activity and population due to various factors such as decreases in farming prices and competition from other similar sized communities within Jacksonville CSA. Callaway, Florida is located in Citrus County, Florida and was founded by George C. Callaway on a tract of land he purchased from the Seminole Tribe in 1868. The Callaways are one of the oldest families in Citrus County. George Callaway started a grocery store called the Gadsden Store on White Oak Drive in 1870 and it remains one of the most successful businesses in Callaway today. In 1902, George Callaway married his wife, Lillie Belle Haskell, and the two moved to their current home on Orchard Road. They had five children: three daughters and two sons. AfterGeorge passed away in 1951, his wife continued running the business until her death in 1984. Today, Mrs. Haskell's grandchildren continue to run the business asMrs. Haskell's Sons-in-law (Avery & Rita). Mrs; Haskell also left some assets behind which have been used to support various community organizations including scholarships for local students and donations to numerous charities throughout Citrus County since her death Robertsons Chapel Baptist Church has been providing worship services at this property since 1976
