The Marines of the Callaway, Florida Marine Barracks first deployment in 1951 were a unit made up of National Guard troops. The battalion served as guard and support for the nearby Fort Walton Beach Naval Air Station. In 1957, the battalion was redesignated as Company A, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines and deployed to Vietnam. During their deployment they earned two battle stars for participation in combat operations on August 14 and October 5, 1967. After returning from their tour of duty in Vietnam, Company A was re-designated as 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 7th Marines and deployed to Afghanistan in 2010. During Operation Neptune's Spear in December 2011 Company A returned home to Florida after five deployments totaling more than three years overseas. They now provide security at local events such as golf tournaments and NASCAR races across the state of Florida. The unit has been awarded numerous medals including two Silver Stars for heroism during combat operations; four Bronze Stars for valor; one Purple Heart; seven Army Commendations Medal with Combat “V”; thirteen National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster; nine Overseas Service Medals including four Battle "Awards" (two with Valor); three Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation Awards (with service dates: 1966-1968); one Kuwait Civilian Award - Meritorious Service Ribbon 2006-2007

In that year, Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of a Marine regiment and providing for its organization and training. On November 15th of that year, 1st Regiment marines sailed from New York City bound for California where they would serve as advisors to the Mexican government during the Guerilla War against Spanish forces. In 1875, another act was passed authorizing the purchase of $1 million worth of rifles and ammunition for use by marine detachments stationed throughout America. This purchase allowed marine detachments to become combat effective units with their own equipment and resources necessary for fighting on land or at sea without depending on supplies from home. In 1898, The Marine Band was created as part of reforms within The Naval Militia which aimed to modernize naval warfare. At this time marines were separated into two bands- full regiments (the old system)and battalion sized units which formed Task Forces instead of singly serving months at a time on station before returning home; these task forces typically operated out Of San Francisco Bay Area under Royal Navy Flag Squadron One (RNFS One). On April 6th 1907 President William McKinley signed an act entitled “An Act To authorize payment to Commandant-in-Chief United States Marines for expenses incident thereto” This act provided For annual appropriations Of $50000 per annum For military purposes alone And also provided That no money should be invested In any public debt or interest thereof until such time As appropriations had been made And no new Appropriations could hereafter be made Without prior acts & approval Of said Secretary Of War who shall keep all Records thereof
