In 1860, Jno Bigham founded Post Road School which offered grades one through twelve instruction by male teachers from Polk County and southward for free to any white person willing to teach their children “the principles of education” including “reading, writing, arithmetic, geometry etc.,” according to some sources this school operated until 1924 when it was razed due to budgetary cuts within the state government at that time In 1881 Jno Bigham donated land northwest of present day Callaway for what would become Callaway Baptist Church; construction began on the church on February 15th of that year and finished three months later on March 10th thanks largely to donations from members of the community The original church building still stands today - used as a library before being replaced by much newer quarters in 2013-14 An important event which took place during these early years was when Dr James Crain established Polk Hospital circa 1865-66 while living in nearby Mims An X-ray machine then became available at this hospital making possible many medical procedures now considered standard practice . The first settlement in what is now Callaway was made by John Calloway on November 12, 1836 as part of the Seminole Wars against the Creek Nation. He named it after his boyhood friend James Fisk who had also settled there some time before. A post office was established at Callaway on January 6, 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 15, 1907. In 1840 an oil well was drilled near present day Callaway by J.D. Morgan & Co.. The oil became known as "Callaway's Well" and production continued for many years until it stopped due to depletion in 1899. Callaway was founded by entrepreneur and developer J.C. Penney in 1911 as a retirement community for executives and their families. At one time it was one of the largest municipally bankruptcies in U.S history with assets totaling $5 billion at the end of bankruptcy proceedings in 1978. The name "Callaway" comes from an early settler's account that reads "the calloway (a type of willow) grew plentifully on our plantation". In 1892, J.C Penney donated land to build his first store on Old Cutler Road northeast of what is now University Drive South near Interstate 95/State Road 10 – and this site became known as Penney Park (later renamed Callaway). The town began to grow rapidly due to its location on major transportation arteries like Cutler Road and State Road 10; however, much credit for growth goes to J.C.'s wife Flora who cooked up several successful business strategies which helped make Callaway a thriving community during its early years: selling eggs from her house on Cutler Rd., providing entertainment for residents when schools were closed by law or snowplows prevented access, running a creole cotton gin operation out of her home until 1923 (when it moved into nearby Coral Springs), leasing space from local landlords so that Callaway could become self-sufficient in terms of general store inventory and real estate prices (), developing a school system which included adult education classes until 1957 (!), becoming home to one of Florida's first full service hospitals when St Petersburg Regional Medical Center opened adjacent to the town hall in 1951 ().
