This donation led to the creation of a Soldier’s Hall within Callaway High School and continued support by General Keyes throughout his lifetime. In 1967, General George H.W. Bush gave $25,000 to build a playground at Park Elementary School in memory of his father who had served in World War II as an Air Force pilot and then later as Governor of Texas. After President Nixon’s visit to Gainesville in 1969, he also visited Park Elementary School and presented a toy gun to each student before departing for California. Callaway is a town in Indian River County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,986 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The Callaway community began as a farming post on Caney Creek in 1847 by Captain John Callaway and his family. In 1858, Callaway became one of the first towns in Indian River County when it was created from part of Stonington Township. The name derived from its location on Calley Creek near where that creek empties into the ocean. In 1865, Captain Calloway's widow married Dr. James Jepson and moved to their new home on Meadow Bank Road west of town. There they raised nine children and operated a small general store until 1924 when they sold all their assets to the Florida Department of Transportation for use as a public road maintenance station known as "Callaway Station". After years of neglect and vandalism by local residents, FDEP restored Callaway Station in 1978-1979 using grant money available through an agreement between FDEP and Mr. David Wessels, then Director of Development for Hillsborough County (now Tampa Bay). The current main street in town is Bridge Street which leads east to US 1 while Meadow Bank Road continues west to State Road 810 (the old alignment of US 1). Other major streets include: Old Mill Road which leads north to I-95W; Westheimer Boulevard which leads south to SR 810; Highland Avenue which parallels SR 810 northerly before reaching US 1; East Ave., also parallel SR 810 before intersecting with US 1 northbound just east of downtown; Heritage Circle Drive which circles around downtown before terminating at McConnell Rd./SR 810 just south of Callaway Park ponds where Lake Cameron used to be located; North Ave./SR 10E runs northeast from town limits along state road 9W until it meets SR 10E again about northwest outside town limits; and Courthouse Drive running southwest from town limits along Courthouse Pond until it meets SR 10E again about northwest outside town limits A large number of businesses that have been located or continue operations in or adjacent to Callway over the years are: Hooters restaurant/bar/pizza place, Wendy's fast food restaurant/grill place, Dollar General store/gas station - both open 24 hours per day - KFC chicken restaurant named after Mrs. Jepson's husband Colonel Sanders (formerly serving up fried chicken daily), Pizza Hut pizza place across the street from Hooters - open 24 hours per day - Two convenience stores - One named CountrywideMart Supermarket chain outlet including gas pumps inside with attendant service available 7 days per week during business hours while other is just called Walmart Supercenter with same hours but no attendant service callawaysmart@coxinternetmail.com these stores are now closed due to economic recession however there still may be some leftovers around here if you go check them out! Callaway is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Callaway's history dates back to 1875 when John B. Calloway founded a farmstead on what is now US-4 south of town. In 1916, Callaway was named after James Millington Calloway, Jr., president and founder of The Miami Insurance Company. On July 1, 1928, the city became one of four cities in Florida to be annexed by Orlando; however, it retained its own charter and government until 1959 when it became an official part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The city's downtown core contains many historical buildings from before World War II as well as some modern facilities such as City Hall and the Callaway Library. There are also several football stadiums located within or near the city limits including Sanford Stadium and Citrus Bowl Stadium both owned by Orange County Football Authority (OCFA). Callaway has been home to several professional teams over the years: The Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL), Cleveland Browns (AFL), and Storrs Tigers (USA Rugby) among others. The last team to play in town was the Jacksonville Jags in 1996 before they moved to Tuscaloosa Alabama that year following a stadium renovation project which increased seating capacity from 98% to 105%.
