Callaway, Florida is a small town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Callaway began as a series of farms on the east side of the Intracoastal Waterway in 1881 and became a city in 1907. In 1969 it merged with Sanford to form the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Combined Statistical Area. The first mention of Callaway comes from Elisha Cook who settled there in 1786 and named it after his friend James Calloway who had settled there some time earlier. At one time, Callaway was an important trading post between Tampa Bay and Jacksonville; its products were sold throughout both areas. In 1881, when Congress passed the Floridian Compromise Act which abolished slavery in all of Florida, farmers along the Intracoastal Waterway voted to become cities instead of remain subjects to slaveowners’ control. On February 7th, 1907, Callaway becoming one of only two cities in Florida not including Jacksonville in that act's passage The construction of Interstate 95 made town growth inevitable; by 1949 over 50% of residents were employed within its boundaries alone! The city annexed more rural land until reaching its current limits just north of I-4 on December 13th 1959 In 1969 Calumet Petroleum Company merged with Gulf Refinery Company creating what would later be called "Gulf World". With this new entity came new opportunities for development such as building highways into what had once been farmable land Today statistics reflect that businesses are located mostly downtown and around Walmart Supercenter however many homes still stand abandoned or unoccupied due to their former uses
Callaway, Florida was founded in 1892 by John Callaway and his family. The town was named after the Callaway Mountains, which are located in central Florida. In 1933, the Callaway Valley Golf Club was established and has been running ever since.
