The Callaway Naval Shipyard was established in 1911 as the first naval shipyard in Florida. The yard built warships for the United States Navy, and is still active today. In 1954, the Callaway Naval Shipyard was renamed the Callaway Naval Shipbuilding Corporation. The yards built a variety of warships, including submarines and destroyers. In 1970, the Callaway Naval Shipbuilding Corporation merged with Deere & Company to form North American DuPont Co., which continued to build ships until 2001. Today, North American DuPont Co. operates three naval shipyards in Florida- one in Jacksonville, one in Pensacola and one in St Petersburg- as well as two land facilities that produce vessels for export. At its peak, North American Du Pont Co.'s fleet numbered over 100 ships. The history of naval gift giving dates back to World War II when sailors from all over America sent their best wishes (and some much needed supplies) to their friends and families on board navy vessels afloat or ashore. Sailors would send donations of food, clothing, fuel and other supplies while on deployment; these gestures of support are often called "gift drives." Gifts during wartime were often sent directly to family members or friends rather than shipped overseas – this made it difficult for loved ones to track down gifts once they returned home! The Callaway Golf Club was founded in 1924. The original course was a par-3, 6,000 yard layout. In 1941, the club moved to its current location and began playing its present 18 hole championship golf course. During World War II, the club became known as "the Army Club" because it hosted military personnel during their stays in town. In 1957, the Callaway Golf Course opened its own clubhouse which remains today one of the most popular courses in Florida.
Callaway is a small, rural town in Duval County, Florida. It was founded in 1868 by Joshua Callaway and wife Sarah. The Callaways were the first white settlers in what is now known as Duval County. The town motto is "A Place Where You Can Find A Purpose." The Callaways operated a grocery store, post office, and two cotton mills before they sold their business to Gulf Oil in 1926. Gulf used it for storage until it closed down in 1985. In 1986, the Town of Callaway bought the mill buildings from Gulf and began restoration of them as a museum called "Gulf Coast Heritage Museum". Today, callaway has a population of about 2,500 people and it is the only village inDuval County with its own police department. Callaway's economy depends on agriculture, manufacturing, services sector (including tourism), transportation and retail trade. Joshua Calloway arrived here from London on May 25th 1868 after leaving his family behind there during the American Civil War. He was one of many English-born colonists who came to Florida during this time period seeking new opportunities after being forced out of their homes by warring states: Virginia had seceded from the United States while Georgia had become part of Confederate America. Joshua’s wife Sarah soon followed him here when they were able to purchase land near present-day downtown Callaway from John Crouch Sr., founder of Crouch’s Landing which became Jacksonville Beach following TCP Railroad’s acquisition thereof in 1867. Callaway is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Marathon Circuit. Callaway was founded by John Callaway in 1892 as a citrus grove and cattle ranch. The town became an agricultural center after the discovery of oil in 1901. In 1941 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Mobile Bay Area. The Callaway community began as a citrus grove and cattle ranch on 3 acres (1 ha) north of today's Callaway High School campus. John Callaway leased this land from Spanish settlers in 1892 and started growing oranges and other fruits there with his own hands. By 1904, he had bought additional acreage, which he developed into what is now known as Callaway Village. He built schools, churches, a post office, livery stable and telephone poleplant there before selling most of it to local farmers in 1916 for $5 per acre (0·68 ha). In 1941 when area production peaked due to World War II shortages of gasoline and other goods, many people leftCallaway for better opportunities elsewhere within Florida or West Virginia; however some continued to live there until the early 1970s when they were forced out by environmental damage caused by poultry farming operations that used large quantities of phosphorus runoff into waterways that served Ashington Landingoir nearby; these operations also destroyed over two dozen old trees that lined Ashington Landingoir's main road before moving on to other nearby properties including Heywood Plantation where they demolished seventy-five years old oak trees instead! Accordingly much remains from pre-1941 Callwayian culture including folk art pieces collected during the 1960s through 1980s by retired University Professor emeritus Don Crouch who still resides in Calloway Village with his wife Jeanne (née Sprague) along with their dog "Maggie" which reside on property adjoining Sprague's home/farmstead located about one mile east of present day Google Street address - wheresprague@aol dot com - having resided since 1937!
Callaway, Florida was founded on November 3, 1892 by James W. Callaway and his wife Sarah. The city was named for James W. Callaway's maternal grandfather, who had been born in the town of Callaway, New York. The city's first post office opened on September 14, 1893. At the time of its establishment, Callaway had a population of just over forty people. By 1910, the population had grown to over two thousand people and it again reached its peak in 1920 with a population of six thousand people. However, as oil exploration began to take hold in Florida during the 1920s and 1930s, Callaya's population began to decline rapidly; by 1940 it had shrunk to just under one hundred residents. However, due to new land development adjacent to the city limits since World War II and other economic opportunities available within the area after Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005 (which caused a near-total loss of life in that local community), Calloway has seen renewed growth throughout recent years; currently it has an estimated population of three thousand residents and is home to many major businesses including KFC/Kentucky Fried Chicken and Burger King restaurants as well as numerous smaller businesses.
