Callaway is a town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,946 at the 2010 census. Callaway is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Callaway was George Wilkinson who came to the area in 1856. A post office called "Callaway" was established in 1868, and remained in operation until 1907. The town name comes from a Seminole word meaning "to call." In 1898, Callaway donated land for an addition to the University of Central Florida (UCF). In 1956, UCF built its first campus on the now defunct site of what is now known as Wilkinson Park Historic District. Settlement began around 1800 by white settlers and Seminole Indians who hunted and gathered fruit trees on nearby Indian Mound Roadways which led east to Winter Haven and west to Sanford. As early as 1836 John Wilkinson had patented 398 acres (187 ha) of land north of present-day Callaway Road with boundaries then including present-day Kissimmee Township and Sanford County; this parcel became known as Wilkinson's Oaks after him. By 1840 there were twenty-six families living here; eleven were black American slavery residents brought over by Captain James Wilkinson when he bought 1/2 mile (1 km) of swampy ground along present day Indian Mound Rd., just south of where today's calloway intersects Indian Mound Rd., for £200 sterling per acre (U$27 per square metre). In 1865 Captain James Wilkinson sold his interest back to his father for £460 sterling or $853 U$S (). This transaction represented one step in achieving racial integration within Seminole society following emancipation from African slave labor seven years earlier; it also helped win support from Floridians for statehood when it was proposed during Reconstruction era . At that time all white landowners owned more than fifty percent of all cultivated lands within Orange County . So Great Britain granted citizenship to many free Negroes before statehood took effect on January 6,1868 under President Andrew Johnson - providing a legal foundation for Negro suffrage - making possible such widespread acquisition by white men not only inside but outside Florida's newly admitted congressional district ; among these Whites owning over 60% shareholding are , Captains James Wilkinson & John Henson who Owned over 95% Voting Rights within Congressional District #3! The Callaway community began as a small farming community on the side of a mountain in 1871 when developer Enos Mills founded Callaway Farms. In 1903, Mills donated 1,000 acres (400 hectares) to the city of Miami for use as an adjacency tract for what would become downtown Miami. forming part of then-DowntownMiami until it was annexed by Miami in 1964 and became its own municipality.
