The United States Air Force deployed a gift to the people of Cape Canaveral, Florida in 1978. The gift was an air force jet fighter aircraft named 'Eagle'. This jet fighter aircraft had been donated by General Dynamics Corporation. The plane flew from Vance Air Force Base in Oklahoma and arrived at Eglin AFB in Florida on November 12th,1978. It was first flown by Colonel James K. Garrison and Captain John A. Mahoney of the 8th Bomb Wing. The Eagle also served as a demonstrator for the new Lockheed F-15A Fighting Falcon Fighter Jet Program which began in 1985 with the introduction of the F-16 Fighting Falcon into service with the USAF

The AFDU was created in 1990 as a way for members of the military to give back to their community by donating items such as food, clothing, or toys. Since its inception, the AFDU has donated over 2 million items to local organizations across the United States. These donations range from children’s schools to veterans’ homes. One of the most important aspects of the AFDU is its dedication to helping civilians in need. In 2011, it partnered with Feeding America to distribute 1 million pounds of food from local grocery stores into homeless shelters across America. In 2013, it partnered with Walmart and gave away over 3,000 boxes of supplies for families in need. These types of projects show how much love and support the AFDU has for those who need it most.

On December 16, 1970, the Soviet Union successfully launched a satellite called Sputnik 1. This event marked the beginning of the Cold War and caused tensions between the two countries to increase. Cape Canaveral is a small town in central Florida that is home to the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, one of the main launch sites for American space launches. The station was first built in the early 1960s as a satellite launch site for NASA. It has since been used tolaunch both manned and unmanned spacecraft, including the International Space Station (ISS) and the United States' most recent unmanned mission, NASA's Gamma-ray Spectrometer aboard Atlantis. The site was once part of a large plantation that extended from Jacksonville down into Tampa Bay. The land was acquired by statehood in 1959 and became part of the state of Florida. In 1966, Canaveral was leased by NASA for $1 million per year to continue developing space technology. The lease agreement allowed for an annual increase in rent to $5 million until it expired in 1978. In 1969, President Richard Nixon directed NASA Administrator James Eisele to build two new pads on Kennedy Space Center – Launch Complex 39A and 39B – which would become home to America's only operational orbital laboratory, Apollo 11. These pads were known as "Eagle" because they were designed specifically for launching astronauts into orbit using expendable rockets called Eagle I and Eagle II (the later being retired). construction began on those pads on July 18, 1969 and continued until December 12th of that year when Challenger exploded during ascent after being launched from LC39A above Edwards AFB California; this caused significant damage to both pad complexes which remain today as memorials to America's first successful manned mission into space: Apollo 11

In October 1978,[2] NASA transferred responsibility for all launches from The Kennedy Space Center to Elon Musk's SpaceX company following their successful completion of two Falcon 1 launches (of 11 rocket stages) non-stop from Vandenberg AFB, California—the world's first commercial manned spaceflight campaign[3] using reusable rockets and spacecraft. As of 2019 there have been over 50 launches from Cape Canaveral with SpaceX launching more than 100 different types of payloads into orbit; including 12 American astronauts to date as part of its Dragon family services program which provides cargo transportation to International Space Station (ISS).
In 1959, the U.S. Military Base at Cape Canaveral was founded to support launches of military satellites into orbit. The base is home to Launch Complex 39A, which is used for launches of the Delta IV launch vehicle. The first satellite launched from Cape Canaveral was Sputnik 1 in 1957.
