In 1969, the United States Air Force deployed a ground force of more than 1,000 soldiers and marines to launch Operation Neptune's Spear in support of NATO's war against North Vietnam. TheOperation was designed to attack strategic targets inside the country and assistance South Vietnamese forces fighting on the front lines. The deployment is well-known for its send-off event, which featured an all-star performance by U2 frontman Bono and then-U.S. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara. In 1962, the United States Army deployed a gift to Cape Canaveral, Florida in commemoration of the first successful manned space mission. The gift was an American flag that had been flown in orbit by the Apollo 11 spacecraft.
Cape Canaveral is a small, isolated island located in the Florida Keys. It was first settled by Europeans in 1565 and has been used for launch sites for over fifty years. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976. The first launches from Cape Canaveral were accomplished using rockets created by Eastern Air Systems. These rockets were originally developed to support military operations in Southeast Asia. In the late 1960s, the United States Department of Defense began developing a new class of rocket called Delta-2 which would be more suitable for orbital research and development. This project led to the founding of Orbital Sciences Corporation in 1984. Today, Cape Canaveral is home to both Delta-4 and Delta-6 launch vehicles as well as various ground facilities that support these platforms. These include Launch Complex 39A which houses the Delta-4 family of launchers while Launch Complex 40 houses the Delta-6 family of launchers as well as other supporting infrastructure. Additionally, there is an important airport located on Cape Canaveral which provides access to these platforms and their associated infrastructure.

The Canaveral Peninsula is located in central Florida and includes the communities of Titusville, Canaveral City, Indian Harbour Beach, Lake Wales and unincorporated areas. The peninsula was first settled by Native Americans in the late 15th century. It was surveyed by Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1498 and named after Portuguese captain Manuel de Noronha. In 1836, a small wharf was built at the mouth of the Kissimmee River to serve as a staging area for launches from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. In 1959, Launch Complex 41 (L-1) became home to America's first human-rated launch vehicle when Atlantis launched John F Kennedy's presidential campaign satellite from L-3 on October 22, 1960. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson announced plans to build a space center on Cape Canaveral Peninsula which would include an operational launch complex called Manned Maneuvering Unit Center (MMC). The site selection process for MMC began in 1966 and resulted in the construction of two pads: Pad A (later renamed Landing Zone 1) and Pad B (later renamed Pad C). By 1970, about seventy percent of all U.S. space launches had taken place from Launch Complex 41 at Canaveral Peninsula; however, development programs were shelved due to budget constraints during the Nixon administration. On July 20, 1973, Space Shuttle Challenger disaster caused serious damage to both pads but also demonstrated how difficult it is to maintain checkouts of large rockets operations at such an isolated location with little access to help if needed. As result of this tragedy Congress appropriated $2 million for further research into failed cryogenic technology used aboard shuttles before they could be lost forever in orbit like Challenger did. On July 16, 1984 another significant event occurred when Enterprise became the first shuttle mission to land on Earth having flown off Delta 4 expendable rocket boosters while being delivered into orbit by Atlantis following its maiden voyage from Earth orbit nearly two months earlier on May 13thvarday morning EDT/GMT+8 days ahead of schedule under license from NASA Headquarters pursuant to provisions of Section 504(a)(2)of Title 5 United States Code which authorizes National Aeronautics and Space Administration appropriations for that purpose only “for conducting exploration And development activities within our national airspace” including “the conduct Of manned flights Orbiting or landing on any planet Or moon...or providing services For other nations through Agencieshopping From Earth” section 502(a)(2)of Title 6 United States Code as amended by Public Law 93–236 §5 2 January 1975).
