The United States Air Force’s (USAF) Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is home to the Space Shuttle and its numerous launch facilities, including the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The facility also houses a variety of other USAF assets, such as an Earth observation satellite monitoring station and a Range Test Site for ballistic missiles. In 1969, the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station was awarded an $8 million contract by NASA to build a new space launcher named Enterprise. The new launcher would be able to loft up to three American Geosynchronous Satellite Systems (AGS) satellites each time it was launched. After being built, Enterprise was used for two launches in 1988-89 before it was retired from service in 1992. On July 26th, 1976, the USAF awarded a $2 billion contract to Lockheed Martin Company of Skipton, England for development of a new spaceplane named Delta II. delta II would be similar in design to Skylab but with more powerful engines and better stability while in orbit. It would also have room for four astronauts and would serve as one of America’s only manned space capsules until Ares I arrived on earth in 2003. Delta II finally made its maiden flight on October 5th 1978 after many delays! It successfully deployed two Agile CubeSats into orbit before returning safely back down to Earth on October 15th 1978. After this maiden flight DeltaII underwent extensive tests which culminated in its first launch on December 3rd 1978 - this time carrying out five experiments! This successful launch marked the beginning of Delta II’s long journey into space!
