Cape Canaveral, Florida is a town in Volusia County, Florida, United States. The population was 8,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–Key West Metropolitan Statistical Area. The towns of Titusville andOCN are both located within Cape Canaveral's borders. The first coffee beans were roasted in this area on July 3rd, 1912 by Mr. Aiken and his family from their plantation near Titusville. The first true cup of coffee was served to the public at Surfside Cafe on November 10th, 1912 by Mrs. Aiken and her husband Harry Hinson Sr.. In 1915 Jethro Gibbs started a small grocery store in Titusville which became one of the most popular shopping areas for Cape Canaveral residents. In 1922 Captain James Webb set sail for Mars with the Mariner 1 spacecraft carrying two tons of coffeebeans that he intended to study Martian climate and soil conditions as well as potential landing sites for human beings. Unfortunately while orbiting Earth he lost power during descent to Mars and did not reach its surface until July 1969 when helander Mariner 9 made an unsuccessful attempt to land on it using a heat-seeking probe called "Magdalena". Upon returning home Webb announced that based on his findings Mars must have been much warmer than Earth because there was no evidence of any water or ice on its surface! The first retail store opened in Titusville back in 1925 by Jethro Gibbs who also ran a restaurant serving food right out front since there was no shopping center then! By 1938 there were over 20 businesses operating within walking distance including 7 banks!
