The station was named NAS Jacksonville but operations were briefly discontinued due to World War I before resumed in 1919 under Secretary of Commerce Andrew Mellon with administrative headquarters at MacDill AFB, Tampa Bay. NAS Jacksonville operated for six months before being transferred to NAS Key West on 12 February 1920 and renamed NAS Miami-Ft Lauderdale on 24 March 1920. On 1 July 1921, NAS Miami-Ft Lauderdale became an operational base for Army aviation under First Lieutenant Dwight D Eisenhower when he assumed command of Ninth Air Force from Colonel Royal Henry Halsey Jr.. On 20 October 1922, following the attack on Pearl Harbor that caused Japan's worldwide war declaration two days later and resulting in America's entry into the war, President Franklin D Roosevelt activated First Lt Eisenhower's Ninth Air Force at Key West]], commanding it directly while Tenth Air Force exercised control over all other branches of USAAF hostilities].
