It has also been home to various US military spacecraft such as Apollo 11 and Atlantis; both flights were launched from KSC with recoverable rockets rather than using expendable launchers like those used at Midway or White Sands Missile Range. Additionally, KSC hosted several successful manned moon landing missions including Apollo 11 which landed on Moon soil on July 20th 1969; Neil Armstrong became the first human being to step onto an extraterrestrial surface upon reaching lunar orbit on July 20th 1969; less than two weeks after his landing at Eagle Base!
