The Navy has deployed gift baskets and ribbons in Cape Canaveral for the past few decades. The tradition began with Captain David C. Howell's 1st Naval District in 1969, when he donated a basket of souvenirs to the new base at NAS Canaveral. Since then, many Commandant-level naval officers and their families have made special visits to the NAS Canaveral Fleet Auxiliary during Christmas season. This year was no different as gifts ranged from collectible medals to 16 inch Tilt-A-Whirl TVs. Gifts were also given out for Special Olympics athletes at the base’s pool complex and even a live turkey was released into space aboard an American flag carrier on Dec. 5th! In August 2006, both Launch Complex 39A at Cape Canaveral Redevelopment Authority (CCRA) landfilled due to concerns over global warming and climate change provisions included in President George W Bush's 2006 budget proposal known as 'Doomsday Budget'. As result, launches from LC-39A will resume using pad No: 5 at Wallops Island beginning February 7th 2007 under a program known as EELVaunch 2K07; this marks significant milestone for Cape Canaveral because EELVlaunches will be powered by three Light Water Rocket engines providing 800 pound thrust each giving spacecraft much greater range than traditional rocket motors FRL engine types currently available worldwideToday there are more than fifty EELVlaunches launched daily from LC-39A; this number is expected to grow up to seventy five or so operations per day within five years time when all fourLaunch complexes become operational again."
