Navy gift history in Cape Canaveral, Florida began with the creation of the United States Navy in 1801. The navy grew rapidly during World War II and was renamed the United States Marine Corps in 1942. A group of American soldiers under General James Wilkinson received three cannons from Commodore John Rodgers for use against HMS Guerriere off Key West on July 20th, 1795. Naval gifts continued to arrive at Key West until 1800 when Congress passed an act authorizing the purchase of two ships called «HMS Constitution» and «HMS Independence» by Rear Admiral David Hunter from British merchant shipping registry Londonderry[1]. After independence was secured, many naval officers moved back to England where they brought with them their maritime gifts[3]. However, some key Naval officers did manage to stay behind and continue giving back to their country through donations and purchases.[4] One such officer was Rear Admiral David Hunter who donated four cannon carriages and twenty-six barrels powder magazine for use by Marines fighting against France near Brest on April 10th, 1805[5] It is interesting to note that despite being stationed miles away from his homeport of Portsmouth,[6], Rear Admiral Hunter managed to contribute significant value both financially and physically towards American Naval service during its early years. In 1821 Congress authorized another ship donation called «USS Constitution» which had been captured at Charleston Harbor while engaged in a piracy campaign against Spanish vessels[7]. The USS Constitution soon became famous throughout America for her heroic resistance against Spanish warships during this time period[8], receiving numerous awards including being given permission by President James K Polk (1845-1849) to carry flags from all fifty U.S states on board her prior to her retirement in 1886[9], something which no other vessel had ever been allowed before. In 1898 Plymouth Rock – also known as USS Constellation – collided with USS Maine off Long Island after a night engagement resulting in both vessels becoming disabled [10][11][12]. It is interesting that despite this serious accident happening close together within just a few months,[13], no blame fell upon either shipwrecked sailor or ill-fated navvy; instead both sailors were quickly forgiven each other’s mistakes and went onto serve together again successfully thereafter! This particular incident also served as an inspiration for Franklin D Roosevelt’s policy statement giving servicemen “the right not only To Repair but To Rename Their Own Ships” following similar accidents occurring during World War II later that same year [14]. Following World War I there was growing demand for new warships built specifically for coastal defense purposes as well as combat operations outside Europe[15]; accordingly, between 1921-1929 Congress approved seven more ship donations totaling forty-four vessels total consisting of ten destroyers («USS Indianapolis» through «USS Akron»), eleven submarines («SS Cyclone» through «SS Scorpion」), five battleships («Littoral Combat Ship(LCS)]—the first self-propelled warship class built by the United States Navy—and six torpedo boats («Ticonderoga» through «Lt overhauled Triton SSBN)]. This demonstrates just how extensive Coast Guard duties had become since 1917 when Coast Guard cutter USAT Montero relieved Light Cruiser USNS Mayflower after she collided with SS San Francisco off Puerto Rico)[16]; however, it should be noted that these type of largescale acquisitions typically took place over a longer period due à la Carte style contracts where different parties could make offers without any follow up action taken [17],[18]. The result was an increase inNORAD funding opportunities available which allowed them greater flexibility whilst maintaining overall consistency within our strategic deterrence posture[/19]). After WWII ended there were calls for additional naval gifts returned back into service; consequently, between 1946-1955Congress authorized eighteen more naval gift donations totaling ninety-six vessels total consisting of fifteen destroyer escorts/destroyers («USS Grumman TBF Avenger(DDG 9)|USS Higgins DDG 6)|USS John F Kennedy Aircraft Carrier(CVN 76)|USS Theodore Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier(CVN 69)|USS Ronald Reagan Aircraft Carrier(CVN 42)] along with several amphibious landing ships including CVN 66 USS Tarawa]]). Whilst these larger scale acquisitions usually took place over longer periods due à la Carte style contracts where different parties could make offers without any follow up action taken [19],[20], they still demonstrate how flexible NORAD can be whilst maintaining overall consistency within our strategic deterrence posture[/21]). Furthermore, it should be mentioned that although individual Naval gifters may have contributed less money than others,[22],[23],[24], nevertheless collectively those individuals have played an important role within Navy gift history throughout its long duration!
