The history of the Air Force gift shop in Cape Coral, Florida dates back to at least 1951. At that time, the Air Force Reserve Officers' Mess (AFROM) located at Fort Myers Army Base was home to the first AFGSHP. The store's founders, Lieutenant Colonel John W. McDonnell and Captain Frank A. Hennessey, created the store to offer enlisted members and their families a convenient way to purchase gifts for friends and family members stationed in South Korea or Japan. At its inception, the AFROM had only a few items available including posters, calendars, mugs and other small items. However, over time,AFGSHP began offering an extensive range of gift products including jewelry and household items as well as military-related gifts such as artillery pieces and tanks. In addition to selling gifts online through the AFGSHP website or by phone from inside or outside of the FMRM,the store also sold items directly to customers on base during special events such as Christmas party shopping or service academies graduation ceremonies. In recent years, thanks in part to initiatives by both Headquarters USAF and local retailer JCPenney (now Macy's),the AFGSHP has seen significant growth with more than 350 employee employees currently working at the facility. The Cape Coral Air Force Base gift history began with the donation of a Consolidated B-24 Liberator bomber on December 21, 1944. The plane was used by the base to conduct research and dropped supplies to troops in Okinawa during World War II. In 1946, the air force donated an additional B-25 Mitchell bomber. This plane was used for bombardment missions over Japan and also played a role in the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. The air force gifted another B-29 Superfortress bomber in 1950. This plane was used for strategic bombing raids against Nazi Germany and Japan. The air force gifted a Boeing 747 jetliner to the base in 1984. This plane is currently used by the base as a training aircraft.

Farragut’s flagship USS Constitution recaptured two Spanish fishing boats that were sailing without permission from Havana Harbour while anchored off Fort Myers Beach. In 1917 Governor Hummel appointed Drury Huggins as Director of Health in Cape Coral after Drury Waugh resigned due to health problems in Miami Beach In 1951 Hurricane Charley destroyed much of downtown Santa Rosa beachfront business including many homes which had been built since World War II when coral became abundant near shorelines After Hurricane Donna caused extensive damage along most coastal areas between Daytona Beach (north) and Naples (south), Captains Robert Byrd (USNS Halyburton)and Ernest JONES(USS Osprey) sent lifeboats from their vessels anchored offshore until darkness brought them safe ashore at Punta Gorda where they disembarked supplies for the local people

Cape Coral is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,835 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lee County and home to the Cape Coral Naval Air Station. The area that now makes up Cape Coral was originally inhabited by the Timucua people. The first European to sight Cape Coral was Juan Ponce de León on October 14, 1513 when he landed on what is now known as Big Pine Key. De León named it La Isla de las Barbadas (Island of Barbados) after his discovery of an island off that name in West Indies in 1511. From this initial sighting until 1800, no Europeans set foot on what is now known as Cape Coral. In 1795, Captain Jethro Gibbs founded Fort Myers on Sanibel Island with three cannons and 12 men; he named it for then-Governor James Fenton who had helped him finance the venture. In 1815 Gibbs abandoned Fort Myers and returned to England where he died five years later at sea after failed attempts to renew his contract as captain of HMS "Triton". A plaque marks the location where Gibbs' remains were interred in 1799 at sea well within present day Anastasia Beach east of town limits nearFort Myers Municipal Airport. In 1847, a group of squatters from Tampa formed a village called Cedar Point near Clearwater Bayou just south of present day downtown Cape Coral; they calling themselves "Cedar Pointians" because they gathered logs from nearby Cedar Point Lighthouse which they used to build their settlement according to plan laid out by Captains John Fitch and George Stephenson while exploring Tampa Bay in 1840 while surveyors for USArmy Corpsof Engineers under General Andrew Jackson's command looking for land grants for settlers on St Petersburg Bayou River Bluffs just north of modern day downtown Tallahassee..
