Polk not only because he believed that Cuba should be open to American settlement but also because he wanted American sailors available when England announced plans to reestablish control over that country following its victory over Napoleon During World War II several hundred Americans lived and worked here including engineers who helped build airfields such as Fort Myers Naval Air Station (now Dowding Air Force Base) which were instrumental in winning the war against Nazi Germany After the war many people returned home while others started businesses such as restaurants, auto dealerships, souvenir stores and engineering firms Today there are still few residents living here except for those working atFort Myers naval base
