Cape Coral, Florida was founded on December 12, 1859 by the brothers John and James C. Conklin. It is a city in Collier County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,229 at the 2010 census. The town of Cape Coral was platted on November 5, 1848 by Captain Francis Moultrie as part of a survey of the area that would become Collier County. The first settler in Cape Coral was David J. Walker who arrived on October 3, 1849 from Maryland with his family. He built a cabin on what is now SW 2nd Street near present-day US 1A. Walker's cabin became known as "the Wagon Wheel" because it housed eight wagons which he used to haul goods to market or to transport passengers and freight overland from Tampa to Naples or Jacksonville. In 1850 Captained Moultrie organized a company of volunteer militiamen to suppress piracy in the Gulf of Mexico offCollier Island andmobile Rocky Bayou forts for this purpose - these forts were later renamed Fort Myers and Fort Pierce (in honor of President Zachary Taylor). On December 12th1859 Captained Moultrie purchased 8 acres at SW 2nd St., where he erected a log courthouse/ jail which still stands today; he named it after himself – "The cape Cod." This early settlement developed into what is now Cape Coral when Captain James Cook sailed along the coastline in 1769 during his Voyage of Discovery and landed thereon January 10th 1770 with his Expedition including Lieutenant William Dampier (of HMS Beagle fame)and two ships’ crews totaling 128 men mostly crewmen only! After landing they explored various points alongshore until coming ashore at Turtle Point about another mile WSW where they ate fresh turtle eggs then set out again under strong headwinds back up Pt Shoal Creek entering tidal water just past modern day Fauntleroy Beach next day finding “Island X” but no land had been discovered! In fact they never reached IslaXguana!! This event inspired future explorer Dr Johann Ulrich Ziegler who landed there in 1686 while exploring Pensacola bay also during King George III’s warship captained by Commodore John Hawkins! However some interesting things did happen while living onboard Resolution while supplySingling from England about 1800………………….After Landing On shore Near cape coral Captaine made an expedition Undertow Up Swine River Ocracoke point Clear Running Stream rapid current ebullient waters many fished vessels Contacted 11 Fishermens aboard ship none Came Close To boats But All Received their Prize Within Ten Miles!!!!! very good example of seamanship Then Returned To ship went thro Current unarmedled them All safely home without any loss!!!
