In those early days, there were just a fewgun stores in town and most people bought their firearms from friends or family members. As business grew and pistols became more common, various companies started selling firearms online or through word-of-mouth connections. It wasn’t until 1934 that the first federal Firearms Act came into effect, which required all handgun sales to be conducted through licensed dealers. This gave rise to the Today’s Gun Store chain, which has since operated in Cape Coral for over 60 years. Today’s Gun Store is Steamboat Guns & Ammo's oldest continually operating store in South Florida and one of the largest Second Amendment retailers in the country. It opened its doors on May 1st 1935 inside what is now called The Post Office building on Main Street in Cape Coral (now known as Depot Square). At that time it was just another small store run by brothers Art and Al Hettinger along with their father Homer Hettinger (a Custom Furniture Dealer) - but it quickly became something quite special! The shop carried everything from handguns to shotguns to rifles - anything you could possibly need to shoot off some rounds! In addition to stocking retail items only, we also sold surplus ammo at very reasonable prices back then! We always had something new available no matter how popular something might have been before! Our customers were sometimes referred to as "The Grapes", because we really did carry whatever they wanted! That being said, our hours didn't always coincide with those at today's ShopRite location down the street - so sometimes things would get scarce outside of normal business hours... but never too rare!). We've seen some pretty interesting things happen at our old location over the years including: A night game of paintball where entire teams participating took turns playing at once (!), several weddings held here including both local celebrities & heads of state (the last being President George W Bush visit in 2008!), numerous golf tournaments (both amateur & professional), numerous fishing trips led by our own Art Hettinger Jr., AND much more... In short,... our old store definitely had its share of memorable moments!

The name "Cape Coral" is thought to be derived from Caravelle, a Portuguese sailing vessel that attempted to circumnavigate North America in 1524-25 and return with reports on its findings. There are several theories as to why the name "Cape Coral" may have been given this particular location: *A possible explanation suggests that Captain John Cabot named his landfall after his friend and mentor, Nicholas de la Roca - who had also exploredNorth America before reaching Cape Cod - because both men were Portuguese explorers working for Spain at the time. This theory suggests that Cabot mistook De La Roca's home port for Cape Canaveral (the present day city of Jacksonville), Alabama which he then sailed past on his next voyage across the Atlantic Ocean; hence, when he finally discovered Caravelle off its coast near what is now cape coral, Florida, he named it Caravelle after his friend De la Roca’s home country. 2) A different theory suggests that local Indians called this site “Kapaha” meaning “coastal point” or “tip of land” due to its strategic location between two major rivers - known today as Marco Island and Indian River Lagoon - making it an ideal spot from which to watch sea levels change or trade goods with Native Americans living along those waterways. 3) Still another theory suggests that this place was originally called Bywater because of how very close it seemed – bordering both Bywater Creek Estuary (known today as Coconut Creek) on one side and Indian River Lagoon on the other – making access easy for ships running between these waterways during summer months! harboring Spanish galleons trading with Native American tribes up until early 16th century
