This colony was named for President James Kenedy of Ireland who had been appointed Collector of Customs at Miami during the Adams Administration in 1825-28. In 1840–41, under orders from President Polk, fortifications were built along both coasts of the United States to protect against British attack and encourage American economic development; they included batteries at both mouth of Blakely River (present dayFort Myers)and present day Caloosahatchee Sound (Blakely Island). At one time or another every U.S port was served by one or more penal colonies: Charleston (1797), Norfolk (1814), Annapolis (1846), Mobile Bay Colony (1849), New Orleans “New Orleanians” (1855) .
