Cape Coral, Florida is a town located on the eastern coast of the state of Florida. As of the 2010 census, its population was 54,711. The area that makes up Cape Coral was originally inhabited by Achenegas and other natives of South America. In 1693, Englishman James Cook discovered Cape Coral Bay and named it after his friend and captain, Nicholas King. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Cape Coral took place in 1824 when Captain John Davenport established Fort Davenport on Ginster Key to protect whaling vessels from Spanish pirates. By 1850, there were over 30 white families living in Cape Coral. However, it wasn't until 1892 that the city of Cape Coral was founded when mail contractor Cockerill erected a post office at First Street and Government Road. In 1916, local citizens approved a referendum asking for annexation by Jacksonville which they did not receive until 1920 despite being offered $5 million dollars for the vote by Jacksonville Mayor Jepson Hargrave With World War II looming large in many countries around the world, Jacksonville decided to annex Cape coral as part of their larger community because they felt it would be an ideal location for military training exercises and airfields due to its strategic location between Tampa and Orlando In 1951-1952 Hurricane Hugo caused significant damage to parts of this region including much of nearby Jupiter Beach The City Council voted unanimously in 1954 to rename themselves "Cape Coral" after then-Governor Lawton Chiles followed through with his promise In 1957 new Interstate 95 was built east across from downtown making it accessible from much of this area; however traffic congestion continued to worsen In 1978 Fort Myers annexed most of adjacent unincorporated territory making cape coral an enclave once again within city limits However during 1990s some issues arose with crime rates becoming high along SR 330 which runs through downtown cape coral; culminating with the opening of Stonington Correctional Facility in 2003 which significantly increased crime rates within city limits
