Cape Coral is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Cape Coral" comes from an historical spelling of crabtree creek or cape carolina which stood near the mouth of this creek. The first permanent settler in what became Cape Coral was Nicholas Baptiste who arrived in 1827 and named it after his home island of Corsica. He developed a trading post on Biscayne Bay near modern day Clearwater and started to cultivate sugarcane and corn. By 1830, Baptiste had built a wharf on Choctaw Key for shipping goods from Pensacola to Cuba and other parts of America. In 1836, Ferdinand Magellan explored Florida's Northwest coast and discovered what would become Cape Coral when he sighted land off Clearwater on July 4th while sailing towards Tampa Bay. On August 14th, 1840 Governor Manuel Perez ordered Captain John Sutter to explore this new coastline as part of the Spanish–American War effort against Spain. Captain Sutter ashore found that there were no trees or water sources worthy of exploration so he abandoned his venture and sailed back home with supplies for his next voyage which began two weeks later under full sail into the Atlantic Ocean! Captain Sutter's discovery has been credited with initiating development around today's downtown area including Promenade Point Marina where he anchored his vessel before exploring nearby Lockport Harbor which served as local port until 1898 when US Naval Station Fort Myers took over operations! After years of development by many different people including citrus growers Julius Rosenwald (son), Will Rogers (brother), Hernando DeSoto ( nephew) not to mention others such as developer Harry Calkins who donated large tracts of land northward along present day US 27/State Road 397 - now known as Gulf Boulevard - much progress was made during World War II with construction on Pearl Harbor Naval Base taking place just south east of downtown throughout 1941-1944! This included work on airfields such as Dowling Field #2 – now known as North Coast Airport – making it one of largest naval installations in SouthwesternFlorida; phosphate mine workings adjacent to current site; docks at modern day University Park within city limits; new hospitals such as St Johns Medical Center & Mercy Hospital both located within city limits; Navy Air Station Clearwater within city limits also providing employment opportunities for locals during wartime; numerous businesses opened up during this time including banks, grocery stores, department stores etc.; Crossroads Mall opening in 1946 followed by more recent developments such as AmericanAirlines Arena redevelopment beginning in 1990 following multiple earthquakes
