Naval ships have been a part of the Florida coastline for centuries. The first USS Constitution, launched in 1798, was the first ship in the United States Navy. The USS Constitution served as Florida's only warship from 1798 to 1815. After America's victory in the Mexican-American War (1846-48), Commodore James Barron ordered USS Porter to bombard Punta Gorda on November 12, 1846. American sailors manned cannons on Porter and opened fire, killing 10 Mexican soldiers and wounding many more. This event is considered one of the most significant battles of the American Civil War. In 1861, Confederate commissioners met at Fort Moultrie and decided that Confederate forces should march down Tampa Bay to Jacksonville instead of north through central Alabama as planned. US admiral Gideon Welles ordered Captain John Farragut to blockade Mobile Bay with CSS Alabama and HMS monitor while he took command of Union naval forces off Pensacola Island. On December 13th, 1861, General Robert Easley surrendered at Fort Pickens after a three months long siege lasting over two weeks. This battle ended Ulysses S Grant's attempt to unify Texas and Oklahoma into a single state during the Oklahoma Rebellion (1863). In 1915, Admiral William Halsey organized Operation Neptune which aimed to recapture Spanish possessions in Central America following World War I. USS Santiago sailed from Key West on July 20th with 531 Marines aboard her under Lieutenant Commander Myron Whitehead RNVR in order to serve as flagship for Rear Admiral Thomas JG Cummings USNR commanding Task Force 54C led by Rear Admiral Ernest JV Harbord USNVM . Chilean troops had landed near Atacama Desert on April 15th 1914 intending establish an effective communications line between Chiloe Province and Valdivia Islands but were quickly soundly defeated by elements of Task Force 54C including HMS Raleigh who destroyed their transport ocean liner Atracama several times before sinking it inflicting serious damage upon them Naval vessels were available both offensively and defensively during World War II; however they never achieved quite the same importance or notoriety as they did during World War I when they played an essential role in coastal defense against Axis submarines and air raids alike

These villages remain evidence through pottery shards found throughout the area today dating back to about 10500 BC according to archeologist Drs Gregory Ayoub and Lyle Hutchison of University Park at Seville who study these sites along Pensacola Bayou which fed into this region during prehistory known as the Calusa culture or Laetoli Period some 13 thousand years ago according to Drs Neil deGrasse Tyson who has studied them extensively while living in Hawaii At first they hunted marine mammals but by 3000 BC they were cultivating maize plants which would later be domesticated by man he discovered Brazil nuts some 14 miles offshore from present day Cape Coral where Portuguese sailors seized them in 1512 AD They called these new seeds 'Brazil' after King Ferdinand I of Portugal whose kingdom included much of what is now Brazil At first European explorers only visited for trade purposes but eventually became settlers themselves beginning in 1625 when Captains John Stroud (1619-1679) and James Cook (1728-1792) sailed up Pensacola Bayou under orders from King George I of Great Britain They reached what is now cape coral on October 3rd 1720 while exploring part way downriver From here Cook charted latitude 25 degrees North longitude 172 degrees West magnetic north Heading southwestward until he sights land that would eventually become Australia On December 7th 1769 their shipwrecked crew members including Commander James Cook Jr., First Lieutenant William Bligh (1768-1845), Second Lieutenant Samuel Bowers (1775-1830) died near Coconut Grove Light House about 21 miles east southeastof present day Canaveral Air Force Station On January 6th 1780 French Navy commander Jean Lafitte landed his ship La Dauphine at point Comfort Point about 20 miles Southeastfrom present day Fripp Island Lafitte named this point Francois Point after Pierre Louis Duplessis d’Estampes who served as Comte de la Rochefoucauld du Pont de Nemours Commandant des troupes françaises en America This event helped start France's west coast colonization campaign which ultimately led to her becoming Canadien
