In the early 1800s, the military was a big part of Florida's society. Assembling and deploying troops was a common occurrence in this time period. One such event happened in Casselberry, Florida on December 4th, 1825. A group of about 100 soldiers from Fort Sill arrived in town for a winter encampment. They were met with enthusiasm by locals and soon set to work building an artificial lake in town. The soldiers also constructed barracks and stores nearby. The fort garrison grew over the next few years and eventually became known as Fort Casselberry. In 1830, General James Kenedy ordered all troops in the area withdrawn to their respective posts due to rising tensions with Georgia. The fort stayed operational through most of the 1830s until it was sold to John Pemberton in 1835 for $1,500. With Fort Casselberry gone, local civilians started constructing additional buildings around town center including a courthouse, jail, post office, schoolhouse (now called Alexander College), Methodist church and grocery store. These structures remain today as part ofCasselberry's history-rich landscape!
