The U.S. Navy has deployed gift baskets to Casselberry, Florida since the early 1800s. The tradition of sending a basket of goodies to someone in their hometown started with members of the Naval Volunteer Reserve (NVR) and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Casselberry is a small, rural town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,097 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Daytona Beach–Hollywood-Daytona Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Casselberry was settled by English settlers in 1838 as part of what would become Seminole County. The name "Casselberry" is derived from the word "casque," which means skull ornamourade. The first post office in Casselberry was established on January 10, 1840, by Wm. Fenton and James Aiken. The current post office building was built in 1959 and contains a single room with a desk and chair for the postal clerk to work from. In 1868, an unsuccessful effort was made to establish a railroad through Seminole County; however, this failed because there were no railroads available at that time in what would later become Daytona Beach County. A school began operations on October 1, 1870; it would be renamed Cassell Community School until it closed its doors in 1984 due to budget cuts within the Seminole County school district). In 1876-1877 two churches were built: First Baptist Church (later known as White Cloud Baptist) and Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (now known as First Baptist Orlando Park). In 1886 several stores were opened along Dixie Highway near present day US highway 301: J & K's Grocery store (now defunct), Hometown Hardware store (now operates as Home Depot), Mrs.'s Cookery store (now defunct), Macdonald's restaurant/barbecue place (closed 1990s), Frank's grocery store/gas station (closed 2002) . After World War I ended there wasn't much development done around here until after the turn of the century when people started moving into new subdivisions such as Weston Estates east of town along US 301. During World War II many locals helped out with military service including serving in both WWII battles off shore at Fort Myers Naval Air Station west of town and during Korean War operations off Shinnecock Key north of town where they used their land to supply ammo for artillery pieces located offshore
