Casselberry is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,391 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Casselberry area was first settled by African Americans in the 1830s. A post office called Casselberry was established in 1838, and became a village in 1840. The name change to Cassellberry after Captain John C. Cassels expedition from Mobile Bay to this same location on December 7, 1841. The Village of Casselberry burned down on October 15, 1849; all but six homes were destroyed by fire then and there. In 1865, Jno Bogan opened a store and restaurant called "Bogan's Place" in what is now downtownCasselberry which later became known as "The Plaza". In 1893 Fenton Willoughby purchased the land that now houses The Plaza from Jno Bogan for $2,500 and renamed it Willoughby Parkette after himself and his wife Olga Murchison Willoughby (1862-1948). Mrs. Willoughby had been born into slavery near Pensacola before being bought by Captivating Wilbur Hirschfeld upon his purchase of her freedom from her owner on February 21st 1886 at Plantation Creek Plantation near Pensacola Beach In 1896 Fenton Wlloughby donated land east of Main Street between US 27/US 74 to build First Methodist Episcopal Church which served as the town's first meeting hall until 1938 when a new building was built next door to house the post office which still meets today as one of local history's most important landmarks!
